Hi... I'm new here and I feel honored to be among you. I hope that being a 62 year old wanna be is permissible. I've always wanted to be a LEO but my health problems kept me from becoming one, although I do try to help out the LEO'S in my area, including Animal Control issues. I also take them goodies every week to show my appreciation for all that they do. One day I got the biggest thrill while talking to a Sheriff I had just met and after telling him about how I try to help them and how much I wish I was one of them he said, "You are." I'll never forget those two little words that meant so much. Now I would like to say the following:

As I continually tell the officers in my area .... THANK YOU for putting you lives on the line everyday for us. I often wonder if people truly realize just how dangerous your job really is, or what kind of person you have to be to do your kind of work. As I see it....it takes someone with split second reflexes, iron clad patients, suburb intuition, and enormous strength both physically and mentally. You must be 'on guard' with everyone you meet while on the job and yet act perfectly normal when at home with family and friends. You must be gentle enough to tend to a child and yet strong enough to take down the most powerful foe, sometimes within the same breath. You must see and deal with things that would put most people over the edge and still be able to sleep at days end. Just knowing that any one of everyone that you deal with each day could turn on you at any given moment is often not thought about by those that don't do your job. All they can do is complain when they are caught at doing something wrong. Whenever I mention these things to the officer's in my area they usually tell me that it's no biggy because they love doing what they do..... but we'd be in one heck of a mess if no one cared to do, or had enough guts to do, the job that yall do. With this, I thank yall for being the special ones that give us peace of mind. Be safe.

P.S. I tried fix up my personal profile in my User CP dealy bob (sorry, I'm not a computer whiz) but it says that I can't do anything yet, so no avatar pic, etc., are on here yet. Why can't I set up my profile, etc., am I too new?

I am German , living in the USA (as a lawfull permanent resident ) since 3 years and I might have some legal questions .
Mostly about domestic violence (my rights as a victim) and the laws here in the US(because I don't want to break one).
If my grammar is not 100% , please have mercy .
English is "only" my second language.

To start off I'm 25 and currently in my second attempt to join Law Enforcement. I own and operate my own very small locksmithing/contracting company that specializes in forclosed homes in the least popular niehborhoods in LA including watts compton, east la etc, I do around 50 sherrif lockouts a year half the court sherrifs know me by now. I know a lot about high speed entry and home security/breaking and entering and I'm hoping this is going to give me a leg up in the hiring process.

I first attempted to join a small police dept in my home town, I passed the written, physical but did not pass my oral board this was possibly due to the large number of applicants (including some lateral hire sherrifs) and only having 2 open positions. I passed the LAPD PQE (written) test with an 85 and am currently waiting on my Backround Investigation to start in late december.

I have to say this is an excellent forum with a wealth knowledge and mentors I am very happy to find that I plan to use to do my very best to enter in LE. If theres anyone trying to join LAPD or LASD feel free to say hi I'm looking for anyone thats been there and done it before me.

Hey there. :) I am from Colorado, and I am a volunteer firefighter. I really love helping people. I always have been deciding if I should go the Fire or Police way! My dad was a cop for 9 years, and now he works for the D.O.C. So he does a lot of work in the jails and prisons. He has been awarded many times and been in the newspaper as well. He got awarded the most D.U.I's in a year than anybody else did. What I meant was he "Caught the most DUI's."!!:biggrin5: I am always learning new things at the fire dept. My two best friends are cops and I have done tons of ride alongs. I am 18 years old so I am going to start college here soon and get some credits. I am getting my Basic EMT here in January. I figure if I don't be a fire fighter and I get my EMT anyway It would look good on me either way. I have a great background. No criminal history whatsoever. In school people would always offer me drugs and stuff and I didn't even go there. I figure my future is more important than getting high and getting caught and never being able to do what I love. I had no friends in school. I had horrible anxiety and it's one of the things I am trying to cope with. This field whether it's fire or police I need to get that taken care of. It's hard but I am not giving up. I been on a lot. I am not going to say I been on everything because I haven't. I been on many car fires. A mailbox fire... lol. and I been on TONS of medicals... Seizures... Cardiac Arrests... Fainting... Diabetic problem... Breathing problem... Car accidents... Drug Overdoses... and on these calls since I am an EMT I don't really do to much but since I am at the FD everyday they let me do the oxygen, Write down the symptoms/ their history... all of that stuff. Just the vital type stuff. Obviously I can't do much because I am not an EMT or Paramedic. Regardless... I love both fields but lately I am really going the police side. It's good to be here, this seems like a great place. :)

Howdy from East TN

Hey there.

Just wanted to drop in and say howdy. I have been a lurker for almost 6 years now, dropping by and reading off and on. Figured I should go ahead and register :) A little about myself:

I first started visiting this site when I was 16, and had an interest in LE. I had always enjoyed helping people, always admired police officers. I had done a few ride alongs when I lived down in Houston a few years ago, but never actually started the process. The biggest problem? I was overweight. And I let the people around me influence my belief that I couldn't change that. (It's hard describing how you feel when the only reason you fit in is being "the token fat guy" ha).

I moved to East TN a little over 3 years ago. I went to school for IT and ended up graduating with a 3.8GPA (highest honers) with an AA in Information Technology. Once I pay off this round of student loans, I would like to get a BS.

Anyhow, I found a nice cushy desk job as a Windows systems admin. I work for a private contractor for the US Dept of Energy. Upon employment, I was submitted for a Q Clearance. After the 10 year SSBI went through, all of my friends/family interviewed by federal investigators, I was granted the clearance. So, needless to say, I have a squeeky clean background. Benefit of growing up in a "yes sir, no sir" military household lol.

So, what am I doing here? Well... the answer is simple. I still have the desire to work in LE. I figured if it was a "phase" it would have passed. I figured after my ride alongs with HPD a few years ago, it would have passed. But it hasn't. And I don't think it ever will until I atleast try.

So what am I changing now that makes things different than before? First of all, I do have a degree and work experience in something other than LE in case it doesn't work out. You never know... I am not going in with rose-tinted glasses, thinking it is an all high speed pursuits guts'n'glory, guns a blazing, high-adrenaline action-packed job. I know it isn't. But, you never know what could happen in the future, and having that safety net of a non LE degree and work experience could help.

And the overweight thing? I started working out and eating right. I have lost a bit of weight, with a bit more to go. But the thing is- I changed my influences. I surrounded myself with positive people, and people who understood. One of my friends has gotten me into running, and... I actually enjoy it now. I plan to run my first 5k soon :) (btw, for those interested.. Couch to 5K is a great program. Google is your friend :) ).

I have looked up requirements for most local LE agencies in this area, and plan to apply once I can meet physical requirements. The few close friends I have told this to, think I am absolutely nuts. If accepted, I would be giving up a fantastic job, that people my age(22) would kill for. I am in a great position to advance my career, etc. I make more money than my parents do. But to be honest, it isn't about the money. It is about following your heart. Yes, that sounds cheesy. But it is the truth. I could work this job and any other IT job with comfort, and coast through my life financially secure. However, I don't think I would be happy. I would always wonder "What if?". And I don't want to wake up 40 years from now and wonder "What if?".

And if things don't pan out, I always have my IT degree/work experience to fall back on. So what could I possibly lose?

Anyhow, just wanted to say Howdy. See you guys in the Physical Fitness board ;)
