I currently work for a local security company. I applied for a ride along with a local dept. and was denied. I was told the reason was a citation I recieved over a year ago. The DA declined to prosecute because it involved an arguement with my ex who was previously arrested for assult on me. Even though they had pulled the officers report which explained the incident they still denied it. What can I do so I can be approved for a ride along? My goal is to become an LEO. I'm currently in school for my BS in criminal justice. What else can I do?

I have a question, I am 20 and have never had a criminal record, not even a speeding ticket. but on October 23 my friends bryce, Staci, and I were arrested at my house because my friend bryce left my house while intoxicated in Stacies car, and he crashed it into a mail box, and blow the tires out 2 tires on the side walk. Next he drove it back to my house, and thats when the cops came. and since staci and I were outside next to her car looking at it, we were also detained, because they didnt no what happened yet. they got there charges and I got mine. I got two counts furnishing alcohol to a minor, and an MIP. I peaded guilty to the charges and got an $871 dollar fine and 3 month suspension of my license. I've been going to school for a criminol justice degree, because I want to become a police officer, and I understand, what I did, did not help myself at all. I take resposibility for it, but I was just wondering, if I am still able or have a chance in becoming a police officer, I no it depends between stations, but I just want to no in general, if I can still become a police officer. Thank you.

IL FOID Card

Ok, Issue:

My FOID card expired Nov 1, 2009. I was sent the renewal form, all that jazz, sent it in, they've cashed my check & now im still waiting for the card.

IL Deer Season starts tomorrow, and I still havent gotten my FOID card, over a month after they cashed my check. I've tried calling the FOID office, and it's always either a 20-30min wait, or its just a plain busy signal.

Soo I'm looking for some IL LEO's for answers ( i know theres an ISP or two on here )

Is there any "grace" period (30day?) on a FOID in any way?
Can I still possess a firearm under supervision of a FOID holder (im 25)?
Since mine has apparently been processed, check cashed, could they run my name and see that i have an active FOID? Can I even possess ammo, or is the FOID only to purchase ammo?

Probable Cause?

I'm 17, a good kid with a 4.0 GPA, and have never committed a crime in my life. A few days ago, I was detained at a store for shoplifting, even though I didn't do it, and it became clear that I didn't do it to the store. They told me later that a customer tipped them off that "I looked suspicious".
Basically, the store took any old customer's wrong hunch, and used it as grounds to treat me like a criminal, which included manhandleing me to detain me, verbally abusing me, and keeping me in the security zone for 45 minutes or so.

I want to sue them for assault, and false imprisonment. I was humiliated, distraught, and had my rights violated.

I looked up California laws on it (since I live in California), and I see that there is a thing called shopkeepers privilege to prevent against lawsuits for this. It hinges however, on whether or not the store had probable cause to detain me. Would an untrained, unqualified customer's tip that I looked suspicious qualify as probable cause?

I know that police officers are pretty fair about these sorts of things, and given that they often assisting a shopkeeper in shoplifting cases, I thought that you guys would be very qualified to help me out.

Also, I understand that LEOs aren't legally qualified for this sort of thing, but I'm just asking in terms of your opinion. I'm still in the process of trying to decide whether nor to to pursue this.

Communal showers at police academies?

I've always been a guy who likes to shower alone. I don't shower at the gym or anywhere else like that, simply because I like my privacy - I'd rather not have certain parts of me exposed for all to see. Prudish? Perhaps.

After PT at a non-residential academy, does everyone have to pile into one large shower room together, or are there private showers so everyone can enjoy a brief washdown without worrying about being seen naked?

(This is a serious question).

With some police academies being about 30 weeks long, do they have scheduled vacation time in there? Like a week in the middle where everyone gets to take off?

And how does vacation time as a new cop work? Are you accruing vacation time from the date you start the academy? I don't think the wife will be too happy with a 30 week academy, followed by having to work another 6 months in order to get enough days to take a week off for a family vacation. That would be over a year of solid work with no break.

Honest advice needed - would you ever choose local PD over federal?

I have two offers on the table right now: one is for a local PD where I live, and the other is from a three-letter agency that could send me anywhere in the US. I have a wife of eight years and a seven year old son in school. Our home life is happy, we live in a nice neighborhood, the schools are great - it's not the most exciting or interesting place to be, but it's not bad.

The local PD would offer a reasonable salary, a reasonable retirement, perhaps some overtime, no commute, no need to relocate, no need to pull the kid out of school where he is settled and put him in a new school that could be a thousand miles away, or in a crappy city. I guess I could put in my time and end up being a detective or working in a specialist role someday.

The federal agency would offer far more money, a far better retirement, probably a two hour each way commute at best, relocation across the country at worst, I'd see my wife and son at weekends only. But it would be my dream job.

So right now, it's looking like a choice between family and career. (I'm too old to put federal LE off until circumstances are better, so it's now or never).

I've thought this through a great deal, and while I'd love to go federal, I'm going to have to choose local PD.

I'd love to hear from some of you who may have made this kind of choice in the past. In particular, I'm interested to hear whether or not you regretted not taking your shot at federal LE and instead chose local LE.

I'd also like to throw in that I have another federal offer, but this isn't an 1811 position. It's just a regular police/security position. This would (in my mind) represent a fairly good compromise, as the family could stay put, I would work fixed shifts, get overtime, but the commute would require me to spend about 4 hours on the road each day.

So I was in a student org meeting today, and we were talking about trans-gender rights, and policies and such that the Washington metro PD has with dealing with them. I felt kind of..... out of place because that's one of the departments I'm applying to, and the general feeling in the group was that they were the "enemy" or some such. But that's not really important to the question.

During the meeting, somebody said something that made me wonder, what would you do if you responded to a complaint where the law being broken was one you felt was unjust? And I don't mean something along the lines of thinking marijuana should be legalized and not arresting people for it because of that stance (which I think is stupid), but something more along the lines of say, the racial segregation laws of the 50s. If you had been an officer back then, how do you think you would have dealt with a situation where you were called to arrest somebody for sitting in the wrong seat on a bus? Would you not have become an officer in the first place in states with such laws? I'm just using racial segregation as an example here mainly due to the amount of distaste we have for them now.

I'm (hopefully) graduating police academy here shortly. We just had a class in which one of our instructors gave us a quick look into his patrol bag to see what he usually brought on duty. We didn't have much time and it wasn't a detailed explanation. With that said, I would like to know if any of you can provide me with advice on what to pack in my bag when I go out on FTO. I have a bag already, but I could use some advice on what to buy, i.e. brand of handcuffs, gloves, etc? The department I am in is a highway patrol unit if that makes a difference

I recently sent a pretty mean facebook message to a girlfriend of my best friend. It was just a bad situation, I shouldn't have said anything. But i did. And now I am being charged for cyber stalking?? I sent ONE message. And I wasn't victimizing her, I was simply trying to say my opinion, but I did it very rudely. I know using profane language causes that to fall under "Cyberstalking" but it just seems ridiculous. I want to be a cop, Im going to college, I have a job, no speeding tickets, no criminal record, full supporter of police. Ask any of my friends, and theyll tell you I would be the best cop. Its what I have dreamed about since I was 8. Now because of this charge, It will make my goal harder. The girl wants the charges to be dropped because she knows how ridiculous it is, and that she acted out of anger, as did I while sending the message. However, now im pretty sure its not up to her, as the state is prosecuting me...So I was wondering if I was not PHYSICALLY arrested, only through the mail, will I still have an arrest record?? And also, if everything goes horribly and I am stuck with a silly cyberstalking conviction, which is a misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor, will that ever be allowed to leave my record? I hear from some people that it never goes away no matter what. Others tell me that after 5 years, which is a probation period, that if I have no other criminal trouble, that i can get it taken off of my record. How bad is this and how much will affect being hired as a police officer?

Hi, I'm 20 years old, graduated high school. Never went to college, I've wanted to be a cop ever since i was little.

The thing is,when i was 15-18 i smoked pot. It wasn't all that much, Just a few times a week. But I've wanted to be a cop all my life!

I have always tried to do right by the law,it was JUST those three years that i had a mild innocent lapse in judgement. So i ask you,Will i still be eligible to be a cop?
