No clue what a SMT school is. If you meant to say EMT, any job will help (and being an EMT as a police officer may help you become a SWAT medic), but it's not as if being an EMT would help make you more competative over any other professional job experience. I went through police academy with a guy who used to be a paramedic, and he wasn't awarded any special hiring points because of his EMT certification, but he got hired, nonetheless.

If you are an experienced EMT and answer 911 calls, it does give you some experience with life-and-death emergencies. My experience (since I am one) has been that the oral board interviewers will be especially interested in your work there. If you panic and forget how to do CPR during every cardiac arrest call you have, for example, they will want to know about that before spending a lot of time on you. If you always keep a level head and take charge in a crisis, they will probably want to know that too. The certification by itself is not worth all that much I would think; doing the work in real life is not exactly like learning about how to do it.

Can't hurt at all to do it

Just remember this. NR is a scam.

Seriously take it, you never know some departments have Police/EMT-medic or even basic

Even if it doesn't help you get on the job it def wont hurt down the road. I was considering getting uncle sam to pay for my EMT school before the the police dept but i opted out at the last minute. I know that this doesnt really pretain to your question but in NYC FDNY Emt's get first on the list of the the firefighter exam. FDNY can be really tough and being an EMT first can make you a shoe in for the academy (fire that is).
