I worked in EMS prior to my current job as a PO (I know i am in the process of getting verified) and thankfully on the few officer down calls we went on there was usually another officer there. I only had to secure a duty weapon on one occaision, and I just locked it into the Drug lock up in the Ambulance and waited for another officer to come and take custody of the firearm, after we got the injured party to the hospital.

Yeah, if you want something not cut, you better figure out a way to take off before we get there. My partner almost cut off an officer's boots on a stabbing last weekend...I was able to point out to him the little zipper on the side.

Kind of how if you don't want to be blocked in, you better move your car before the fire trucks get there. :D

Also goes for LEOs...back when we had an F-14 go down in a neighborhood south of the airport, there were so many police vehicles that the Airport Crash trucks could not get to the scene.

Just a reminder....just because some fire apparatus are on the scene, doesn't mean more ain't comin!! :D

And for EMS crews as well. The most useless thing is a poorly positioned EMS transport unit that gets blocked in, but I see it often. The first in EMS unit will invariably pull to the front of a fire building, etc., and get parked in, blocked in by hose, etc.

The stretcher has wheels. Park a block away, facing in the direction of your preferred receiving hospital, put your toys on the stretcher, and wheel it to the scene. When someone goes down is NOT the time to be saying, "Hey, we need the ladder truck to move!"

    OK, rant over. :D

    Yup.
On traffic collisions, as long as there's already a unit on-scene blocking traffic and lighting up the scene, the ambulance should be parked in front of everything. Not only can it take off easily, but if a car plows into the scene, you don't want him taking out the vehicle's that's going to be used to transport the victims. Happens often enough in certain areas to be a serious consideration.
