We have acrazy guy who rings all the time to ask us to contact Nicole Kidman and tell her that he loves her.

If she ever ditches Keith Urban and feels like hooking up with a mentally deranged 55 year old I will have to call her!

I have the non emergency number in my phone cause sometimes our radio system (still analog) gets really crappy and I can just call up a dispatcher when working, but I don't see why anyone would program 911 (or other similar emergency services numbers) into their phone.

All my phone does annoyingly when it's in my pocket is sometimes the camera will get activated and take like 20 totally black pictures until I notice it. It's not too fun to sit there for a few minutes deleting all of those pictures.

Is your phone a clamshell (starter of the thread)? If it's not, they usually have some kind of keylock thing anyways, just to make sure this prob doesn't come up again.

I can just see having 911 programmed in my phone and trying to remember which speed dial it is. I'd call half my friends and bleed to death before I found it.

That doesnt make sense to program 911 into your phone, unless when you program your voice dial you just program it as you screaming... that might be beneficial. :D

When I dial out of here to call back home, I have to push '9-9' to get an outside, international line, 1, and then area code/number.

I've also dialed 911 accidently (oops ;)), and most of the 911 hang-ups I respond to are the same thing.

Interesting about the International Emergency numbers, I never gave that a thought.

I'll have to check the phone I have now, but for several different cellphones I've had, if you dialed "1" and continued to hold the number down, it would go to "9-1-1". It was pre-programmed that way from the factory. I assumed they all were.

I was just about to post this before I read what you posted. Sometimes people from outside the area code (living in Charlotte with a Raleigh phone#), they'll do 9119-xxx-xxxx pressing 1 twice. Only happened a couple of times though that i've heard about .

Our policy is to respond to any 911 calls, period. Even if they say it was an accident, we have to go and check it out.

I tried this a few minutes ago (I'm at work, so I just called over to the 911 center and let them know I was going to test a phone,) and I can say that no combination of 112, 112*, or 112# works from a verizon cell phone as an emergency number. 112 and 112# tell me that my feature update can not be completed and 112* tells me that my call can not go through as dialed. :p

A lot of the calls to the emergency number here were for people trying to dial an international number. I'm not sure if this still applies, because all my international calls now I do on the computer, but you used to have to dial 00 to get int'l then whatever your country code you were trying to dial. since the emergency number here is '000' the emergency operators would frequently pick up while the numpty on the other end is still dialling the forty-numbered international phone number and have to listen to all those beeps. :D

Actually 112 is not internationally recognized, but the European Union did issue a directive in 1992 making it the official emergency number for all participating countries over there. Many countries have their own emergency numbers like Russia which is 159 and Israel which is 100. Having said that, many cellular providers know that people coming from other countries are going to revert to their own emergency number even if they are over here and will re-route those calls through our 911 system. I believe Europe does the same thing for our 911 calls over there.
