    911 able to recieve photos/videos

    http://www.officer.com/article/artic...on=20&id=34709

I see this both ways. Yes, it would be helpful, especially in those situations where you have NO idea what is going on, or how to explain it. For example, I've seen two of those types of car accidents.

    1. Car made a full 90 degree 'turn' off of the road and into the grass.

    2. A car was about 100 feet down an embankment, but was right side up, had no damage, and was FACING THE ROAD, as if it was backed down.

However, the dispatch center better make sure their computers can handle this.

Seems like a lot of "gee whiz, that's cool" but not a lot of value added, at least for the fire/EMS side of things.

Why not just say "a car ran off the road" or "a car went down an embankment?" The direction the car is facing doesn't matter. Tell me there's a car down an embankment at 123 Main Street, I'll go there and look down the embankment. If it's going to be hard to locate, then maybe people should concentrate more on giving good locations, good descriptions, and waiting at the scene to direct responders.

Yeah, your right for fire/ems, but they were saying, for example, a hit and run accident, you may be able to take a picture of the car, and send it to the dispatcher and it can get put over the air right away, rather than trying to remember, which may not be as accurate. Or, it is easier to take a picture of the robber/mugger/shooter, than try to describe all of his physical features.

That being said, I believe that officers can not rely on that alone, and still need to interview people face to face.

In a high stress situation some people can barely dial 911. I can see a lot of time wasted with them trying to snap a picture and send it in.

This is all part of NG911 or Next Generation 911. The artice talks about NY getting it because they are the only ones that can afford it, and probably only because of grants. It will be many, many years before this becomes even remotely common place.

Huh. Every now and then, the technological innovations and such make me think about getting back into the field.

We don't even get cell 911 calls yet (coming soon) and we are a big agency.

It's worth bumpkis if the RP can't tell us where they are though -- biggest challenge we have is people saying..."I'm right here!"

With 75% of all calls I take I can't get the caller to calm down enough to get details as to location, number of injuries, assailant still on scene, etc... I don't see them taking a picture with a steady enough hand so that I can get any useable info from the picture. But you bever know maybe the kids that can text at 90wpm can get a picture
