On May 12, Gregory F. Baysinger, MCFP Springfield Captain, will be honored by the National Association of Police Organizations during its 18th Annual TOP COPS ceremony in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the TOP COPS Awards is to pay tribute to law enforcement officers from local, county, state, and Federal agencies for their outstanding service to their communities. Captain Baysinger is being recognized with an Honorable Mention award. In his current position, Captain Baysinger provides leadership and direction to nearly 650 staff, ensuring the safe management of the Bureau's oldest medical referral center, which houses approximately 1,150 inmates of various backgrounds and security levels. With his knowledge of the various medical units, Captain Baysinger works closely with health care staff to determine the appropriate housing and security needs of inmates. Captain Baysinger trains and mentors staff, especially in the area of crisis management, and he coordinates monthly mock emergency training exercises with institution staff and local law enforcement. During the past year, Captain Baysinger has used his experience to help de-escalate several incidents.
Captain Baysinger is the first BOP staff member to receive this award. Director Harley G. Lappin noted that "Captain Baysinger has brought an energy to his position that is contagious to those who come in contact with him.
