Super noob question.

Okay so.. im new to the forums i can seem to find the search bar to find topics.. and im new to the law enforcment community. im trying to become a CO. but what i was wondering is... i know this is a really noob question, but can someone please, KINDLY explain to me exactly what a "peace officer" is? i hear people saying CO's are "Peace officers" what exactly is that and what do they do?
