For a C.O. to apply for a personal firearm, is it true that you have to wait 6 months after graduation to apply. How long does the whole process take, from when you graduate until you actually get your gun??

Corrections doesn't need guns anyway ;)
yeah that is ture, COs have to wait 6 months after graduation, my co investigator told me this. I think after the 6 months is up you have to get some paper from one of the deputies and apply for 1 of the 17 types of guns that are issued for use by the department of corrections. Most likely COs will never use the gun on rykers but COs mostly use the gun when they are off duty for protection!

Academy time counts as well.So you have to wait 6 months from you date of appointment and you have to get a form approved by a captain and go purchase a gun on the approved list and then make an appointment at the range and if you qualify you can start carrying off duty.
I went to a Lunch at Rikers to introduce the CO job to people interested - seems like a real exciting job, every CO I got to speak to seemed like they LOVED the job, we got to go to see the jail, BBQ - ESU showed us all of their equipment. awesome day. I suggest everyone should do homework on NYCD, because there are alot of misconceptions about the job, for example, that they are paid LESS then NYPD, that is not true at all starting Sept 1st, they make 69,475 at top pay, and a veteran CO explained to me that in the last 10 years he has not made less then 100k in any given year with overtime. always keeping my options open !
hopefully one of NY's Finest or Boldest very soon!!

Yes it is because the NYC COBA (corrections union) is current with their contract while the NYC PBA is still a couple of years behind on their contract.
Once the PBA contracted is settled, the cops will get all of their owed money through a retro check and will surpass the corrections officers contract.

I'm new to the sight, seems pretty interesting and entertaining. I'm in the process of becoming a CO in NYC and I've done and I'm continueing to do as much research into the profession as I can. I passed the NYPD exam also (just received letter in the mail) but I'm 35 now and dont think I'll qualify to go through processing, am I correct?
