Understand this my friend...You are nothing but a TURN KEY. The State of NY, may have given you peace officer status and you need it, BUT...you ain't the police. Know your place and we will all get along well. When I stop you be polite, a gentlemen or lady, speak correctly and you will be on your way with "have a nice day". Anything else, and I'll see you in AAB.

Sorry, but I smell someone who is REALLY full of themselves. I've worked both sides of the fence, and still do, but if you think anyone needs to kiss your a$$ because you work for a Police Department, you have a lot to learn. It sounds like you need to "know your place" as well.

Walk a day in our shoes and you will change your tune. Spent my first 10 years in Highway Patrol and never had a problem with another Cop or Fed, local or otherwise. NYC corrections my friend is a whole other story. Corrections is a crappy job and I guess someone has to do it, its just that for the most part, the quality of people they get would never be hired by most PD's...AND lately, we (NYPD) have been taking anybody with a pulse.

Don't get me wrong, there are great people in NYC corrections, I have friends there, but the majority of them act like perps when you stop them on the street. They can carry guns off duty and are peace officers, but they are not cops. Our jobs and responsibilitys are vastly different.

PM me if you need to take this discussion further.

    Stay Safe.

    Keith,

You may have worked both sides of the fence, but you have not learned that your yard in WI is different than our yard here in NY. No two yards seperated by a fence can be compared with the same across the way. WI and NY are two diferent lands.

Unlike some other states, NYC Corrections are not police officers. In NY, Peace Officers and Police Officers are two totally seperate things. Night and day. The dog cather is a peace officer in NY. The fireman are peace officers. The meter maid is a peace officer. Campus security guards at city colleges are peace officers. NYC Corections are peace officers. NONE ARE THE POLICE!!!!!! Period. Therefore, they are not "on the job" nor one of us. They are like every other citizen in the city, except they work for the city and do a dangerous job. Do they get a free pass on car stops? No! Do I and others respect that they do a dangeours job related to our field? Absolutely! Do working men and women get a break every day? Yes, when they act appropiately.

This is the EXACT ATTITUDE he was refering to and what casues problems for many decent and hard working correction officers out there. I underlined Bashers key words: POLITE.....GENTLEMEN or LADY.....SPEAK CORRECTLY! And in your words, you describe that as "kissing the buttocks."

You are the one who needs to check yourself. Since when is it a$$ kissing to expect a person who has violated the law to be polite and speak correctly to the law enforcement officer stopipng them? My momma told me you get more with honey than vinegar. I have been stopped many times for violating the law, specifically VTL infractions. And as a LEO, I am polite and courteous to that officer. I will end up identifying myself as a LEO and want to show that officer the respect they have earned and deserve. I also know MY behavior is a direct reflection of who I am and the agencies I have worked for and currently work for. Therefore, I treat them the way I would if my mother and boss and agency brass were standing on the curb witnessing the whole damn incident.

Being polite and courteous while acting like a gentleman or lady is not a$$ kissing, it is being a productive member of society and maintining the values and ethics we swore to uphold. And since you have that verified tag, you should understand that. There is a big difference between being a reasonable person and kissing a$$. Nobody gets a free pass when they act like a jerk, even correction officers (who ARE NOT THE POLICE in NY). And not being polite, courteous, and acting like a gentleman or lady is being a jerk.

If you can't behave like a mature adult when stopped, and think having to act that way is a$$ kissing, you need to check yourself and remember what law enforcement is about.

I think basher52 does know his place considering he has close to 30 years on the job. We are the POLICE in New York City. We don't ask anyone to kiss our ass, but if you aren't on my job, show me respect when you interact with me and you will, in turn, get respect.

It was always funny when I would pull over a CO, and he/she would always give me an annoyed look as if I was wasting their time. Then when I would ask for license, registration, insurance, they would say "I'm on the job" and quickly flash their shield and ID card barely letting you see more than the light reflect off the shield. Upon further inspection, the ID card would be from the lovely NYC Department of Corrections. I always reminded them, they had a job, but weren't on the job. I never wrote them a summons, but I was pretty close a few times.

Policing in one department differs from that of another department. Being the police in New York City is a whole other animal and in my opinion cannot be compared to any place in the entire world. With that being said, next time you decide to tell another LEO that he is full of himself, please know what you are talking about.

I am a NYC correction officer with 12 years in.Let me start by saying the 2 jobs are totally different. The only thing that is the same is the color of the uniform.NYPD enforces the laws, hence the title law enforcement-police.NYCDOC officers enforce departmental rules and regulations-not police. As far as getting pulled over by the NYPD,i treat the officer with respect because thats the way i like to be treated.I dont go flashing my shield in the officers face because i think thats the fastest way to get a ticket. Its like when the NYPD comes in to the intake area in any jail,They dont go in there bossing the c.o.'s around. They are professional and we should act the same way.NYCDOC has many, many perps with shields working for the department and most feel like they are the police.WRONG.I know the job i do and the limitations of my duties.Just my 2 cents and thanks for reading.Every body stay safe.

Is there anyway that you could clone yourself thousands of times and replace every corrections officer in NYC?

I wish more of the DOC guys had good attitudes like you do.

    Glen,

CO1669's post here is like all of his others: professional and on point. I have said it before and will say it again, he is what EVERY correction officer and NYPD cop should be like! He is definately one of the few that unfortunately get the label due to the idiots out there. I would love to have a few cold ones with him sometime.

I think he is in the wrong line of work and should have jumped over years ago. Hopefully he is part of the command staff. His calmness, maturity and clarity in his posts and ideas lead me to think he would be a great supervisor and direct the agency to grow in the proper direction.

Plus he is a Kiss fan! What else could you ask for?

Thanks for the kind words guys.Joeyd6,you name the time and place and i've got the first round.Guys just know this.I come from a long line of NYPD and Suffolk cops in my family, both on my side and my wifes side so i have heard for a long time about how c.o.'s act off duty and when i became a c.o. i saw first hand how correction officers think they are untouchable just because they have a badge and a gun.Believe me i tried for years to get on the family job starting with the housing and transit tests back in the late 80's but correction was the first job that called but i dont regret it.I have learned alot in the past years on dealing with the different personalities of the inmates and officers and i believe i am a better person for it.Now it has got to the point where i dont work in the jails anymore.I drive the court buses now and life is good.Joeyd6 and nypd7748 take care of yourselves and stay safe.

As far as being a supervisor,No thanks.Rescheduled tours, going back on probation, waiting for top pay again and having to deal with problems that an officer should be able to handle by them selves.I am going to stay an officer and drive my bus until i retire. And besides i am a sloppy eater and would never be able to keep that shirt white.

I will agree that respect gets respect, but whether you're a cop in Wisconsin or a cop in New York, respect isn't going to be automatic. I have over 31 years in this busines and everyday I earn respect.
