    Wear a TIE!

After 8 months and a considerable amount of money/time spent (ie: taking time from work off, taking extra classes in college to met the required 39 credits needed etc) I went to thr 6 hour orientation. Paperwork and fingerprinting...went fine. I went yeserday to the physical exam (six hrs).

I was wearing a double breasted suit, buttoned down shirt and new black shiny shoes. Since I was NOT wearing a tie I was asked/told to leave. The officer in charge said I could come back tomorrow or the next day. I said it was not possible as I had to alert my boss a week to two weeks ahead of time and I was already losing money for today. He shook my hand and said "Good Luck" That was the end of my corrections carreer, all becaused of a necktie!!

You should have had a tie handy if not worm one. Or couldnt you have run to Walmart and picked one up ?

I keep telling anyone and everyone to dress for success each and every time you appear in the hiring process.

Did the instructions for the day say what not / to wear ?

Not that you should have been excused for it (unless the instructions were specific) but I was always under the impression that for "business attire", wearing a suit, especially a double-breasted one, requires the wearing of a tie...

I have to agree that that was a bit much on the part of the department, unless you were told to wear a tie in advance and just didn't do it. I've worn a full suit to every interview I've been to (including tie ;)), but don't think I've ever worn a coat or tie to a physical exam. Just seems a little goofy, but each department is different, I suppose.

I will say that having an attitude of "F*** this s***!!!" won't do much to help. There were obviously plenty of applicants available if they were willing to dismiss you for something so simple. And truth be told, they did give you the opportunity to come back the next day (even though you say that wasn't convenient for you). It's tough getting into LE or corrections, and you have to be flexible. If your schedule won't allow that, there's really not a lot departments can do to change that. Sorry.

Kidding right? Your complaing due to being shown the door?

Sounds like that Corrections Agency is probably one of the best around. God forbid they have standards and expect their employees an future ones to dress appropiately.

You went for a job orientation. You took enough time to get into a suit and couldn't take two minutes to put a tie on? And then complain?

I don't care is they addressed dress code or not. Your applying for a job. You wear a suit to all potions of processing, in some cases that includes the written test. Sounds like you have a lot to learn.

    Not complaing. I am guilty

I agree with all the posts. I was the one not wearing the tie and I harbor no bad feelings toward the one in charge...just relaying this happenstance so no one else goes sans tie to a physical.

Going to have to agree with joeyd6 on this one. I work for a pretty good department, be the latest trend is to lower the standards, simply because they are having trouble hiring qualified people. I'd rather be short on staffing and hire good people then to just hire worm bodies.

I'd say keep trying. Corrections in most areas are very understaffed and could use good people. I think you could be a good addition to that department, don't give up.

    Not for nuff'n

VJ but always keep a tie in the glove or trunk. a neutral colored one....blue or something that can go with different suits (to some degree...cause not everything goes with blue.) Hell, even if your wearing a blue suit and the tie is bright red.....at least you have one on....

sorry it didn't go well for ya, keep plugging away.
Do what you have to, do what you must do.......just don't F#%K with my world.
