I will give you that you have a job a lot of people would be piss scared to do; so do firefighters. Both have my respect on those levels. But I think what people on here have a problem with is the way that so many in corrections put down law enforcement and think that they're "better." Cops do the work picking up the perps; you babysit them and make sure they don't escape. Don't act like you're the only one in danger.
You might get ganged up on in the prison, and yes, cops have a gun and backup...but there are plenty of situations where a cop is one on one against the same violent offenders, and unlike in jail, those violent offenders might have guns. Have you not seen the videos of 'routine traffic stops' like the one where the officer was shot in the face by a guy who didn't want to go back to jail and didn't know the officer was just stopping him for loud music? Or the cop who had one suspect stopped and his friend jumped out of the car and then both started shooting at him? Those were situations where there was no time for backup to arrive before the $hit hit the fan. And those are a just a couple examples of a couple cops who were fortunate enough to live; plenty more are killed on a daily basis.
I'm not saying your job isn't dangerous or that you aren't at risk of dying. But the same is true of a lot of professions, again, like firefighting. I don't consider your profession any less noble and, like lawyers and judges it is a part of the criminal justice system, but it's simply not law enforcement. And Joeyd6 and others who have seen that, like security guards, a good number of people in corrections are those who have been rejected from PD's, get a chip on their shoulder, and then try to play like they're better than the profession they wanted and couldn't get in. So understand where their assumptions come into play when someone cops an attitude and starts claiming how great corrections is or saying it and they are better than law enforcement and LEOs.
Bottom line...be proud of the work you do. It is a necessary function of the criminal justice system, and you are putting yourself at a risk for the common good, and that's never something to be taken lightly. However, be proud of it knowing that it is what it is. LEOs are no better than people in any other profession from firefighter, to teacher, to computer programmer, to doctor...and neither are corrections officers. Everyone does what they do, what they're called to, and something that is, in some way, necessary to the function of our society.

And I never saw a thing in Joeyd6's post that indicate him to be anything other than an intelligent and well spoken officer of the law. I've never seen him be racist, and while I don't know him personally I'd venture a guess he's not a loser either. This attitude is exactly where people are pegging you for being any range of things they're calling you, and you give them that perception. Whatever your profession I think you'll find you get a lot farther with people a lot faster if you treat them with dignity and respect rather than aggression and accusation.
We must all fear evil men. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good men.
