Prison officers review child inmate batons ban

Prison officers in young offenders institutions could be allowed to use batons on inmates as young as 15, under a review of guidelines being conducted by the Ministry of Justice.

Officers are currently only allowed to use batons on those aged 18 and over but the Prison Officers Association (POA) called for greater protection from a rising number of assaults on its members by 15 - 17-year-old juvenile offenders. The Ministry of Justice is looking at the regulations.
