Probation Officers

Does anyone happen to know anything about Probation in VA? In particular about types of duties and daily activities.

What did all of you current p&p officers do before landing your position with the DOC?

I graduated just under a year ago from Marquette University, and currently work at a crime-reduction non-profit in Milwaukee. From everything I've read, most p&p officers start out working with at risk youth, or in juvenile corrections. Is this the case, or is there room for varied work experience?

Before P&P I retired from the USAF after about 28 years. I'm a former Pennsylvania Act 120 police officer with a BS in Government from the University of Maryland. I also hold 3 associate degrees; criminal justice, computer science and personnel administration.

After I retired from the AF I was a medical investigator for the State of Delaware and did some part-time work as a security guard. After two months the State offered me a P&P position which I accepted. I'm currently a P&P Domestic Violence officer.

In my area, the state prob/parole off. are paid better than the local PD/SO. Wierd.

I'm a PO in Georgia, felony.

Private Probation handles the MIS case's.

We carry the GLOCK 23's.

I too am pursuing a career as a Prob. Officer. I have a degree in Social Science and hope if employed with the the County I can pursue a Masters in Social Work. I would love to make this my final career move, since I am no longer a spring chicken.
