    Online completion of degree...

    Hi-
I'm currently attending PSU through their World Campus program. The really great thing is that they give me credit for my academy certification and additional training I had while on the job.

I really enjoy the format, it's easy to do, but you really have to be self-disciplined. I'm taking 22 credits, which is really insane. I don't think I'll be doing THAT again. But, I do plan to take courses over the summer semester so I'm ready for my LSAT.

I'm thinking about Georgetown for my law degree.

Has anyone else received credit for their LE training? I guess I should also see if my military training is included, also...never thought of that until now.

    What PSU is that?

My experience has been that places that give life credit usually aren't certified, but there might be exceptions.

Have you researched Georgetown much? I think it's pretty hard to get into. A friend of mine graduated from there, but he had a degree from Harvard.

By "PSU" I'm assuming you're talking about Penn State?

Also, when you said you had academy certification, does that mean you're a certified LEO?

I WAS a police officer. I am not one any longer. When I got married, we decided that it was time for me to finish my education and go after my dream to be an attorney. I've had enough physical deterioration that I would never be able to do the Job, anymore. It's hell getting old. I have had two spinal surgeries and I will soon have to go under the knife to have both jaw joints replaced with some type of titanium constuction. The docs say it is from repeated trauma to either side of my jaw. It's kind of a super-severe case of TMJ. As much as I hate the idea of surgery, I'm more than ready to get this taken care of because of the pain, the interference with my being able to speak clearly at times and the inability to eat certain foods.
Yes, I'm referring to Penn State.
My husband owns a company so I was able to decide whether I wanted to work, or not. I'd rather pursue my degree and raise my child.
My GPA is pretty good, so I'm hopeful about Georgetown, plus we have some good connections.

I'm not looking for verification. I'm quite happy just hanging out in the public area and chatting in-between studying. It makes a nice break. I hope that's okay.

Perfectly okay. As a former LEO (i.e. not retired or active) you wouldn't be qualified for verification but that doesn't mean this site can't be just as much yours as any other member here (verified LEO or otherwise).

I completed a degree through an online program. Like you have done, I chose a college with a good reputation that had the online program as an addition to their classroom programs. I figured the ones with the good rep wouldn't risk losing it over such a small number of students. When I enrolled I had only gone through one academy and that one was through the Air Force. I did receive credit for it, but I'm not really sure I received the credit because credit was given by the Community College of the AF (yes it is regionally accredited) or because I went to the academy and the University gave credit for it. I did have to submit a resume and supporting documentation for everything I claimed on the resume. The academy was supported from the transcript from the CCAF.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

Translation for the intellectually challenged: If the government screws the people too much, it is the right and duty of the people to revolt and form a new government.

I strongly suspect you got the credit because of the connection with the Community College of the AF. I took correspondent courses (yeah, long before the Internet) from the U of Maryland most of the time I was in the Army and it was all accepted when I went back to school. I had grossly screwed up my first year in college out of HS and needed to "redo" it and that took care of it.

Some years ago (decades actually) there was a flurry of "universities" that would give you credit for work experience. Mostly, it consisted of taking a lot of your money and giving you some worthless document. But even an established small private college here tried that and it blew up in their faces when no one else would accept their degree. They had to scramble to keep their accreditation. I remember them advertising a MBA degree and giving credit for at least 5 years working in a business environment.

I've no doubt anything from Penn State will be good, but alarms went off in my head when she mentioned getting credit for LE training. Unless it's approved college coursed involved, I would be leery.

Since this is a mostly self-sponsor state, most academies around here are run through universities. I got 12 credits for completing the academy (or maybe 15?).
The academy I graduated from was the one where I got my Bachelor's so on my transcript I have the extra 12 credits. Didn't mean anything to me as I already had a degree, but it meant alot to some of the guys that didn't. Not sure how transferable they were though, they'd most likely have to stay there if they wanted any sort of degree
