    Question Verbal Judo?

Is anyone familiar with George J. Thompson and his Verbal Judo series? I have the book from a college class, Problem Solving and Critical Thinking. Its a great book...the class was great as well.

I know it came in useful in that class...got stuck up in front of the class and told to defend why pedophilia was wrong. This was at random. Never saw it coming. And a class mate had to defend why he thought it was not wrong...and then they made us switch positions and use a different argument. Was difficult but its part of the whole verbal judo thing.

The question here is for those who are familiar with the book and/or class, do you ever use any of the methods mentioned in the book? Or had anyone taken his classes and actually used that knowledge?

There is a specific series of it for Law Enforcement.

I use it every single day.

It was part of FLETC CITP when I went there. Simple concept that usually works well with rational people.

Most any federal criminal investigator you speak with will have had it. It's useful EVERY DAY... whether we are talking to people at work, dealing with your children, "dancing" with a motorcycle salesman (a few months ago in my case), or just (innocently) screwing with people at the bar.

It's a good skill to have in everyday life. However, sometimes it is fun to just ignore what you have learned in the class and just use brute force... but that is just my opinion.

I don't know of any cop who has not been taught verbal Judo. I hear Lawyers use it all of the time, too. In fact, here in Texas we teach it to armed Security Gusrds.

Yep, brute force and verbal "kempo" are useful in the alley behind the Main street bar at zero dark-thirty on government payday when running across an asshat who perceives anything other approach as weakness to be exploited.

Sometimes you just gotta let them know from get-go you will have no problem at all with ripping their lungs out before you go enjoy some scrambled eggs with catsup.

lol how many people are actually rational that ya'll deal with. I know had I tried this with my ex I woulda gotten my rear kicked and then some for being a smart a**.

Does it work with the majority of offenders or is it more a tactic for the general public?

It's not about falling the examples that you learn in the book and/or in class. It is more about following the spirit of what they are relaying in the materials. You need to adapt the frame of mind and what you say to your specific audience. THAT is when it becomes useful... it is not the "Is there anything I can do or say to make you..."
