POST certification BEFORE the police academy

I have been researching community colleges in my town of Colorado Springs, Colorado. To complete your degree in criminal justice you can get certified in Peace Officers Standards and Training, which for Colorado is a requirement to become a police officer. My question; If you apply for a police department in Colorado do they prefer the post certification over having a degree or similar education to a police officer (such as a security guard)? Will post increase your chances of getting a job with an agency because it shows you are competent as an entry level police officer?

I have never heard of any state allowing you to become POST certified before going to the academy. Reason being, every state I know of, part of the POST requirements is learning the tactics (can't be learned in college) that are specifically taught in an academy, and not taught in a college class.

A degree would help you in getting hired.

Putting yourself through the academy (if possible in your state) and getting certified on your own dime, then applying for jobs, would also help.

If you were in Florida, I would recommend getting your degree first, then going through the academy and getting certified. Simply because in my academy class, there were MANY recruits who had degree's all ready and were now in the process of getting their certification.

    Good Luck.

In Missouri, the POST Certification is the result of graduating the academy, so the title of your thread reads like "Bachelor's Degree BEFORE College"

    That just makes no sense.

I think what you might have heard was you can pay your way through the academies in some states, which would give you POST certification before being HIRED.

    *ahem*

If you look closely, it says "Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement ACADEMY" which means in addition to your degree, you must attend the academy to get your certification. So, before you go calling a LEO on this board a smartass, particuarly since we've went down the path to getting our certification, you might want to be more mindful of your own comments on here to avoid making yourself look like a gigantic *******.

The LEO was giving you his honest advice, and was not being a smartass.

    Enjoy the red reputation incoming.

Yeah, it would seem as if reading comprehension isn't your thing.

You go through the ACADEMY to get your POST certification, and the college credit hours that you earn in the academy are applied toward your degree. You still have to take other courses to complete your degree, but the academy should count for around 30 credit hours. That means you'll have to take another 30 hours or so to get an associate's degree. Pretty much every community college that runs its own academy offers the same thing.

    Get it now????

Since the internet is all over the world how do civilians know that these "LEO's" are who they say? If anyone who responded to my question knew what I was talking about,(citicop), he would realize that you can get certification as a peace officer pefore the academy..... looks like you guys aren't as bright as you think. By the way the college I'm going to is full of people who have occupational experience in what they teach!! (including the Pikes Peak Regional LE academy). Before you guys post check your facts first!!

You dork. The Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy IS a law enforcement academy. You are required to go through a POST certified academy BEFORE you can be POST certified. Jeez.

Would you mind explaining to us just exactly how you can become POST certified without going through a POST sanctioned law enforcement academy?

Good luck in any LE career endeavors. You are going to need it since you display much difficulty in reading comprehension and in written communication skills.

You are a troll and have already been banned, so you can't respond, but since you made this personal, I'll go ahead and get the last word here...

My original response was clearly addressing the situation in the state of MISSOURI, which is where I am, and the only place I'm really suited to discuss how to become a police officer, since I *AM* one here.

I did a few minutes of Internet research, and in CO you cannot be POST certified without the Academy either. The link you gave goes to a Police Academy located with (and affiliated with) the Community College in question. It isn't run by a particular department, but that doesn't mean it isn't an Academy.

The remainder of your question deals with whether or not putting yourself through this Academy will be helpful in the hiring process. It almost certainly will; it means that the hiring Department won't have to PAY for you to go to the Academy, because you already paid for it on your own.

In my area (again, this is in MISSOURI) it is nearly impossible to get hired to any department unless you already have the Academy and are POST certified.

Good luck getting hired with *that* attitude...

    Citicop.

NOTE: The above response is much more calm and professional than what you deserved. It may surprise you that you got a response like that given my alleged "reputation" around here. I'm not aware that I have a bad rep around here, unless you got a lot of PM's from other trolls who also don't like honest answers to questions.

BTW- Did you notice that 100% of the people who responded to your thread agreed with ME, and 0% agreed with you? Does that tell you anything?

    Probably not.

    Wowsa.

Since the original poster has been run out of Dodge, the question is now moot. Thread closed.
