    Finding an internship

I went internship hunting today and ran into a fairly big problem. All the local departments around where I live can't handle the internship requirements that I need to get. Has anybody else ran into something like this. I went to the Sheriff Dept and they said they would concider it but the hours required were way more then they were used to accepting. My local Police said there was no way they could handle it also.

I am going back to school soon so I am going to talk to my advisor and see what he has to say about this. I was just wondering if anybody here has any ideas or advice.

How many hours do you need and by when?

Can you do two internships at two different departments?

If your looking for a great internship, Try FLETC. They offer an internship, plus you get federal training.

Any internship requires a background investigation. These can last a few months, especially if you plan to apply to a federal agency. My department handles all of our internships. The advisors have contacts with many local and federal agencies. We were required to keep and submit a weekly log of our activities. At the end of the internship we also had to turn in a paper (at least 15 pages) describing our experiences.

If your school will allow it, and the two departments accept you, then yes. I did two internships with two different agencies.

I agree...try coordinating half with the sheriff's office and half with the city police.

My school requires 176 hours and it has to be done in 2 months during the summer. That comes out to about 24 hours per week and apparently that is a lot compared to all the local schools. I had a glimmer of hope today, one of the local agencies, that I was told didn't do internships, called for more information but by the time I got out of class he had already left for the day. Tomorrow we have a CJ job fair with about 25 agencies here at school. Time to iron the shirt and pants and print off some resumes.

My internship requirements were 210 hours, which I completed over the course of the summer. I didn't run into any problems with this, and was accepted for the first and only internship I applied for (with my local SO). I had a great time, and I wish you the best of luck in finding one!

Keep us updated, and let us know if you try other approaches, like what was said about maybe spreading out the hours over two separate departments / internships.

A lot of CJ students at my University also serve internships with the Court system, maybe you could do half your hours with the Police, and the other half within the court system?

Squeeg, I am pretty sure I know what school you go to, but wont mention.

I know people that went there, had to do the 176 hours in 2 months and they had no troubles.

Where are you trying to get one? I would recommend the State Police, they will do the 176 hours.

There are many many agencies, I know a lot of people that completed it.

I think the problem is that I live in a small county with no major cities so there isn't the personnel at these departments to do such an internship.

There are no State Posts in it?

Can you commute to another county?

I have to do 480 hours for my internship this summer and I am in the background process with two departments right now. I just called all over the place to see if they could handle the amount of hours that I needed. I found that a lot of smaller departments could not handle my 480, so I went to the bigger departments in the area. I would recommend a big department, because you would experience a lot more than at a small department. You can always work at a small department if you don't like the big city after your internship.
