Self sponsoring and hring process question.

    Hello,

My plan is to attend a self sponsor academy, to increase my chances of being hired. At the same time I'm also going through my Sheriff's Dept hiring process. I'm attending the pre-background orientation this month and I'm also taking a physical agilities test next week for the self sponsor academy for acceptance. My question is, will mentioning to the background investigator that I'm taking my own initiative to attend the academy on my own income, increase my chances of them hiring me? I would assume they'd pay closer attention to me, since i would be knocking out a major portion of the process.

Please give me any feed back you'd like

    Thanks.

IMO, No. IF you GRADUATE, however, Then MAYBE that might help because you'll be saving them money. That being said, some departments require you to graduate from their own academy and you might have to go through another academy upon being hired.

I'm attending the regional academy for agencies in the San Diego area. So i made a educated choice in picking the academy they use. So i wouldn't have to attend another academy, my training would be done. I

Graduate first, then talk about it.

Budget/economy sucks right now but apply everywhere and see if you can get someone to sponsor you (prehire you)...

Depends on what you're applying for. If it's simply a corrections position then I'd say not really.
If it's a position in patrol, or other areas that require you to be a licensed Peace Officer, yes.
But, it will definitely open more doors for you down the line, regardless.

Samuel are you LASD or LAPD? I appreciate the advice guys. I tried to sign up on <<other police website>> but they seem like they don't like to activate accounts... So i gave up. I'm already liking it here!

I would mention it. Right now I think laterals are the only ones being hired. I would bet money that the academy closes for awhile due to recruits being hired.

Regarding your question. I think it shows interest which is good. They also know that once you graduate many departments will be interested in you. I went to that academy in 2003. Last I heard it costs a department about $100,000 from the time of hire, to being a solo officer. Of course you won't be a solo officer, but you get the idea of why a graduate has a lot to offer versus a recruit.
