Can I still become a police officer if I tried psilocybin mushrooms as a minor?

Unfortunately i made a stupid mistake in highschool by taking shrooms at 17(currently 20). At the time i did not know it was such a big drug because my friend told me it was just like salvia which was llegal at the time. Recently i just found out in my narcotics class that it was a schedule 1 drug. I was wondering can i still become a cop? I know i made a mistake but who doesn't mess up somtimes. I was wondering if get a degree in criminal justice to show how serious i am about becoming a cop and stay clean for 6 years can that give me better chances of becoming a cop? Iv'e heard it is an automatic dq at most police agencies in California but I have read on other post that southern california are a little more lenient on there back ground check.

You did not "make a mistake."

You made the decision to use an illegal drug to get high. It was a bad decision, and you may regret it, but it was not a mistake, because you INTENDED to do it when you made the choice.

It would be a DQ at most every department I am aware of. Even in those departments who have minimum standards low enough that you aren't automaticlly disquallified you will be up against competition that does not have issues like that in their pasts.

Meeting the minimum standards is usually not enough to actually get hired.

Hallucinogenic drugs (LSD, shrooms, PCP, etc) tend to be automatic disqualifies, for life. Every agency has their own standards, but I've yet to see one that accepts applicants who've used hallucinogens, no matter how much time has passed.

    Ditto!

I love the kids today.....everthing they made a choice about that ends up working against them is a simple "mistake."

Apparently you still meet Seattle's minimum requirements. They don't seem to auto dq for any specific drugs as long as it has been 10 years time. But as others of stated competition will be tough no matter where you apply. Minimum requirements don't equal a job.

BTW I tired to post a link to thier qualifications page but I do not have enough posts. I encourage you to check it out for yourself though.
