ICE Arrests more than 2,400 Convicted Criminal Aliens in 50 States 6/22/2011

ICE Arrests more than 2,400 Convicted Criminal Aliens in 50 States 6/22/2011

Over a seven-day period in May, officers from all of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations field offices throughout the nation arrested more than 2,400 aliens with prior criminal convictions. The arrests occurred in 50 states.

All of the criminal aliens taken into custody had prior convictions for crimes such as armed robbery, drug trafficking, child abuse, sexual crimes against minors, aggravated assault, theft, forgery and DUI. In total, 22 percent of the individuals ICE officers took into custody were immigration fugitives with outstanding orders of deportation who had failed to leave the country.
"The results of this operation underscore ICE's ongoing focus on arresting those convicted criminal aliens who prey upon our communities, and tracking down fugitives who game our nation's immigration system," said ICE Director John Morton. "This targeted enforcement operation is a direct result of excellent teamwork among law enforcement agencies who share a commitment to protect public safety."

The seven-day operation, the largest of its kind, involved the collaboration of more than 500 ICE agents and officers, as well as coordination with CBP, the U.S. Marshals Service, the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and our state and local law enforcement partners throughout the United States.

ICE conducted the first successful “Cross Check” operation in December 2009, and has since conducted “Cross Check” operations in 37 states, including regional operations in the Southeast, Northeast and Midwest. Previous Cross Check Operations resulted in ICE arresting 2,064 convicted criminals, fugitives, and aliens nationwide who have illegally re-entered the United States after removal.

To date, ICE has removed a record number of more than 109,700 criminal aliens from the United States in Fiscal Year 2011, including more than 585 criminal aliens convicted of homicide and more than 3,177 criminal aliens convicted sex offenders.

    Great job ERO.

Good job. Especially after announcements of changes to "secure communities" program. What I would like to know is how many of these people were arrested for minor crimes in cities that didn't run their fingerprints through the ICE system.

Could a person convicted of a violent sex offense in Mexico, try to get in the US and get on the ICE deportatation list, come to Los Angeles illegally, get arrested for a minor crime and have his previous conviction go unnoticed because LA opted out?

Do the 2400 people they arrested have regular warrants outstanding before the arrest? If a patrol office stopped them for a traffic violations, would he see a felony warrant for "Criminal Alien" for that person and be able to arrest them? And if not, why not?

How does DHS Secretary comments on arrests being down jive with "To date, ICE has removed a record number of more than 109,700 criminal aliens from the United States in Fiscal Year 2011." ?

Methinks the Nappy has changed border strategery from arrest and process to suppress through presence. Then she can claim crossings are down because arrests are down. If they were serious, they'd put the Army on the border to form the "presence" and let CBP agents just do arrests and interdiction instead of "presence."

ICE and US Customs investigations are one-in-the-same, sort of. US Customs Service was a pre-2003 agency (prior to the US Dept of Homeland Security) under the US Treasury Dept. ICE took the investigations sections from US Customs Service and Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS, an agency formerly under US Dept of Justice) and formed a new agency (though at first ICE was sort of the "Island of Misfit Toys" in DHS, as it also had Federal Protective Service, Federal Air Marshals, and some other non-immigration/customs investigative entities under its umbrella). Therefore, US Customs Service and INS no longer exist, they are distant memories of a by-gone and simpler time prior to the bureacratic nightmare that followed the aftermath of 9/11.

The uniformed/inspection side of US Customs Service went to Customs and Border Protection (a completely different agency from ICE), as did the US Border Patrol (formerly under INS). To make things even more silly, ICE recently changed the name of their investigations division from ICE Office of Investigations to Homeland Security Investigations (to include a new badge/credentials forthcoming). For several folks who were special agents of either US Customs Service or INS they will be getting at least a 3rd new badge/creds in their career. Clear as mud?

    Thanks

    Kimble:
Thank you for a very detailed explanation to what I thought was probably a stupid question. That clears up a lot for me.

I see the CBP people at the airport (CLT) all the time. The other night I saw the ICE folks coming out of the customs area with 2 bg's in tow.

A very bizarre way to introduce yourself to the site, and break one of our rules (i.e. resurrecting threads that have gone dead for months)...
