    Academy question

I know that alot of you are going to shake your heads at this, but this is a serious question.
I am very interested in the academy. I do have Law Enforcement experience in the military, so I don't have any worrys about the academy itself. however.... What I would like to know is if my girlfriend can stay with me while at the academy... now I don't know if housing is on base or off base, but if it is off-base, will I get free housing? Can she stay with me? Even if there is on-base housing, is there a place that she can get near the academy?
5 months is a long time, so she really wants to know her side of the picture. Thanks

Where are you planning to work?

Academies are different all over the country, but I don't know of any that supply housing for family members.

When I went through the VA Academy, which was something like four weeks, give or take a week, I couldn't have anyone in my room. However during the last week I had my wife down and we stayed in a hotel for a week on my own dime as she needed a vacation and I had a new baby I wanted to see. It worked out well.

That being said, I knew this was going to be a fairly easy academy. If you're talking about Border Patrol as your thread is in Border and Immigration Issues, you may want to think twice. The Border Patrol academy, at least from the agents I've spoke with, is very tough not just physically but academically. You may want to not have her down the whole time until you get a good idea of what it's like and how much free time you'll have. The last thing you'll want to do is screw up all the hard work you'd have into it at that point.

I'll quote Big from your other post

Not to be a ball buster or anything, but next time how about just posting the question directly, instead of reopening an 18 month old thread.

Anyway, the answer is, she can come, but she has to stay and foot the bill out in town. I checked with this for my fiancee and she won't be able to stay with you. I'll even say that she can't stay at your place even just for a night.

As Piggy said, you will be so exhausted from physical, when you get home, you have so much academic work you need to take care of too.

To be honest, 5 months isnt a long time to be away from someone. Just think of the Troops in Iraq. They only could WISH they would only be gone for 5 months.

So the answer is no they will not supply your family, girlfriend, whoever with housing. If you really want, you could always call the BP Recruiter too ;)

Why is this in "Border and Immigration Issues"?

If you were hired by ICE or BP (or likely any federal agency) and will be attending a FLETC, the answer is no, your girlfriend cannot stay with you. You are not permitted to have overnight guests in quarters with you. If you are quartered off base, you are still not allowed to have overnight guests with you.

If you were hired by a local/state agency, where you are quartered is dependant on where you are attending. The local academies in the Phoenix area send you home at night, so your girlfriend can stay in your house/apartment. The only agency that I KNOW quarters you is COTA in Tucson for the DOC.

If you are quartered off base, you will pay for housing UNLESS you would normally be quartered onbase and there was insufficient room, so they stuck your butt in a hotel for a short time.

As far as housing in the area, there will likely be houses, apartments or hotels available.

By the way, if this is the only thing that will hold you back, then I would think a FLEO job wouldn't be for you ;)
