    Mexico customs

Does Mexico have border officers or can you just drive across without talking to anyone?

Having lived there for a few years, working with the consulate (and liasing with top Immigration officials) I can state unequivocably that they do have military on their borders, customs at land and air border stations. However, Mexico is experiencing it's own wave of illegals on the south of their border.

Like any country, they has the right to restrict the quality and quantity of foreign immigrants and visitors entering or living within its borders.
The constitution of the United Mexican States borrows heavily from American constitutional and legal principles (circa 1917). In lip service only.

It combines those principles with a strong, exaggerated sense of nationalism, cultural identity, and state power. There are many provisions in their constitution to protect the country from foreigners, including foreigners who legally legally reside there; naturalized Mexicans too!

Did you know that private citizens may make citizens' arrests of lawbreakers ( ie illegal immigrants, tourists overstaying their visa, working illegally) and hand them over to the authorities? A monetary reward is given.

Immigrants, tourist, both legal and illegal, may be expelled from Mexico for any reason and without due process. They are arrested at gunpoint and put on the most convenient and cheapest form of transportation to their 'home.' Try doing that in most developed countries. This was in the mid 90's; I doubt much has changed.

Expect a search when you cross the border. Have your paperwork in order. Recently the Mexican Army has been enforcing the borders, checking border crossings and the like.

The 'rockpointonline' link was informative, Adamantine.

Do not forget that any vehicule involved in an accident within Mexican borders, regardless of national or foreign registration, will be seized and the driver jailed if there is any sign of blood. Guilty until proven innocent. Better carry a lot of cash for 'mordidas', as one could languish in putrid jails for a long time. Most leave the scene of an accident because any sign of injury is in their Criminal Code; therefore seek out a lawyer, post haste.

    Blood?

Sorry I'll never go to Mexico. No matter how many illegals I can grab and turn over to authorities for "money". :p

I haven't crossed in llike three eyars, but when I crossed the San Ysidro POE there were armed 'personnel' there but there is rarely any intervention. I do remember one time crossing with my now wife, she was waved to stop and she just kept going... obviously nothing happened. *shrugs*

Your initial question regarding border/customs officers was answered by a few others. Do you have a linear line of thought that couldn't be answered by a computer search?

You can do no wrong in my books, my dear Normie. But what is 'searchfu'? Is that like 'kungfu', Grasshopper?

Oh, to answer Cjcrew's second question, I think they bat their eyes at one another across the frontier.

I was on a cruise last month and stopped in Cozumel, Mexico. While walking, I noticed quite a few cops, and there wasn't a one of them that had a gun in their holster! They all had holsters, just no guns! I wish I could have gotten a picture of one officer I saw that had a sandwhich in his holster!

When BIG was a Border Patrol Agent, we had no official or otherwise relationship with any Mexican entity. if needed, we'd call and they would reciprocate if our assistance was needed.

Mind you, BIG's info is about 5 years and some change old. Though, he was just down in the border region a couple of months ago and no one mentioned any change in their relationship. If anything, BP Intel and what was Customs and INS, now CBP Intel, seem to be getting along better than they ever did.

That's still pretty accurate. I'm not sure what relationship CBPO's have with Mexican customs officals.
