Border Patrol Location Selection

Hi all,

Is the border location you select when you first apply permanent, or can you change to a different location later on?

I'm from the east coast and don't know which location to select:confused: Are some location better than others? Can someone please help me and suggest which to select?

991 - South Texas (includes the Laredo Border Patrol Sector and the McAllen Border Patrol Sector)
992 - West Texas/New Mexico (includes the Del Rio Border Patrol Sector, El Paso Border Patrol
Sector, and Marfa Border Patrol Sector)
993 - California (includes the El Centro Border Patrol Sector and San Diego Border Patrol Sector)
994 - Arizona (includes the Tucson Border Patrol Sector and Yuma Border Patrol Sector)

For many South Texas is the number 1 choice. And as such is the hardest sector to get. I've heard you have to score in the 90's to even be considered for McAllen sector. I'm in McAllen Sector (pure luck) and like it. All the duty stations here have a decent sized city you can live in or near.

Marfa and Del Rio are supposed to have some real good stations and El Paso, TX and LAs Cruses,NM are good as well but many of the other stations in west Texas and NM are in small towns in the middle of nowhere.

Arizona has some good stations as well, Tucson and Casa Grande are supposed to be great stations. Ajo sucks!!! with Nogales not to far behind. The work is supposed to be good and your promotion potential is a lot better. I've heard of a lot of SBPA's (GS-12's) in AZ who have 3-4 years in and FOS's (GS-13's) with 8-10 years. In McAllen sector you'ed be lucky to get a SBPA at 10 years. I know I'll have ten years next August and can't expect a GS-12 for at least 3-5 years at my current duty station.

California, Welllllllll California is California and the work is supposed to be good but you can't afford to live there. 65K a year and you qualify for food stamps :eek: 3 Bedroom, 1 bath, 1200SQFT house for 400K Who can afford that?
