    My take on immigration policy

I am generally not known as a "conservative" (whatever that means). I do think that either we ought to open the borders, or enforce the laws already in place. To start, I would impliment a policy where if an illegal is arrested for illegal immigration, they lose the right to citizenship in the US for life. They get sent back to their country of origin - period. We need to reward those who jump through hoops to either immigrate legally or apply to temporary non-resident passes, and come down hard on illegal immigrants.

Yes, my family fourteen generations ago immigrated from Ireland. But if memory serves me right, we did the jumping through hoops bit and complied with the law.

The problem is we do send them back whever that may be. They just pay a smuggler a couple of thousand dollars and come back. One story I read stated to the affect that ICE deported the guy from Colorado on a Thursday. We escorted the guy back to the Mexico. Not three days later, he was arrested again in Colorado. Nobody could believe how fast the turnaround was for this guy. Tough issue.

How would your policy deal with children brought illegally across the border?

Children can be somewhat of a different story. If they have family in their home country then sometimes we will send them back to their family (i.e. Elian Gonzalez). If they do not have any family in their home country, then usually the Immigration Court will make an exception and let them stay. It is totally up to the Immigration Court though once they've been charged with being in the country illegally.

I've posted an address to a story of this happening in Atlanta recently as I couldn't get it link up. :D

I couldn't find the story, but the case was decided this week that the child has to go back to her home country.

AMEN!!! Now, while we're still making some positive decisions, let's start deporting all the children of illegal immigrants as well! I'm sorry..I'm very much aware of how unfeeling that sounds but I'm not the only one thinking it. It's a huge loophole that some legislators are starting to talk about fixing!

It might be more unfeeling not to. Afterall, not sending the children back would be seperating and depriving them of their parents, family and support system.
