Continuing his belief that the Federal Government should pay for the jail’s housing of illegal alien prisoners, Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones has mailed another bill to the Federal Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”). This bill is for all prisoners believed to be “Undocumented Aliens” housed in the Butler County Jail at any time during December, 2005. The December charges total $23,380.00, covering a total of 30 different individuals, and equates to 334 billable days at $70.00 per day.
In late October, Sheriff Jones sent a bill to I.C.E. for $71,610.00 for housing what were believed to be “Undocumented Aliens” that were in the jail at that time. That bill spanned a period of several months as some of those prisoners had been incarcerated since June. In December, a bill for the month of November charges totaling $30,030.00 was sent. To date, the Sheriff’s Office has not received any payment toward those previous bills. Total amounts billed to the Federal Government to date is now $125,020.00.
In sending today’s bill to ICE, Sheriff Jones remains firm in his belief that Butler County taxpayers should not have to pay for criminals he believes should not even be in this country. “I am continuing to bill the Federal Government for these prisoners, who all appear to be undocumented. They are committing crimes here. They continue to be a drain on Butler County’s financial resources,” said Sheriff Jones. “So far, my bills have gone unanswered, but I plan to keep sending them to I.C.E. There’s little else I can do, unless and until the system is changed or the government decides to deport the illegals in my jail,” he added.
