Time to declare war on Mexico.

    El Paso Times

    Pot-laden truck creates armed standoff

    Daniel Borunda
    El Paso Times

A marijuana-laden dump truck got stuck in the Rio Grande on Thursday evening in Hudspeth County, leading to a standoff between U.S. law enforcement and what appeared to be the Mexican military, sheriff officials said.

"It's a very serious incident," Hudspeth County Chief Deputy Mike Doyal said.

"We are very fortunate (Thursday) night no one got hurt," Doyal said. "Everyone had the presence of mind not to cause an international incident, or start shooting."

The incident began when Border Patrol agents tried to stop the dump truck on Interstate 10, sheriff's officials said. The truck fled to Mexico in the Neely's Crossing area.

The truck got stuck in the riverbed, and the driver took off running. Agents "started to retrieve the bundles (of marijuana) when the armed subjects appeared," said Agent Ramiro Cordero, a Border Patrol spokesman.

The Border Patrol called Hudspeth County sheriff's deputies and Texas state troopers for backup, both agencies confirmed.

Doyal said the truck driver returned with the armed men, including men who arrived in official-looking vehicles with overhead lights and what appeared to be Mexican soldiers in uniform and with military-style rifles.

The Mexican army is used in anti-narcotics operations. Army officials could not be reached for comment.

The standoff ended when the "soldiers" used a bulldozer to pull the dump truck into Mexico, sheriff's officials said.

Doyal said the bulldozer is kept in the area and is suspected of being used to create makeshift paths across the river.

"The 1,850 pounds confiscated (by U.S. authorities) was probably a third of what was in the truck. The rest went into the Mexican side," Doyal said.

Cordero, the Border Patrol spokesman, described the incident as an "armed encounter with drug smugglers" but would not confirm whether the Mexican military was involved. Investigations into the incident continue.

A war at this time is probably not a good idea atleast with mexico. We already have enough troops out playing in the sand.

I honestly don't think it would take much to take over Mexico...our military ran over the 4th largest military in the world (Iraq) in 2 weeks. Yes, our soldiers are spread all over the world, but we'll be pulling out of Iraq soon. The problem with a war with Mexico would be the aftermath. The civilians in Mexico would resent the United States, and it would be hard for them to assimilate. I think that if we attack Mexico, we'd have to take OVER Mexico, and annex it. That would lead to a much larger border for us...and that's not good, either. We hardly have the manpower to patrol our southern border at its current size...what about after an annexation? The coastal border alone would be astounding, and nearly impossible to monitor.

I agree with what many have stated on this board: a very large fence with sentries. I'd add a 150 yard buffer zone so as to give whoever wants to reach the fence a chance to turn back. You touch the fence, you're done. Shoot to kill.
When you wish upon a falling star, your dreams can come true. Unless it's really a meteor hurtling to the Earth which will destroy all life. Then you're pretty much hosed no matter what you wish for. Unless it's death by meteorite.

I think we should first have a civil war amongst ourselves, AND THEN go kick Mexico's ***, then Canada! :D

Don't take them to war.. I don't want that friggin country. Just build a huge wall and put mines around it.

However, if I was Mr. Bush... I'd be telling that prick Fox that the next time Mexican Soldiers cross the border into my country, Those soldiers will be sent back in body bags, and the burnt out remains of the truck, dumped across the border as a reminder. Then a large detachment of Marines posted at the border.. Heavily armed.. With orders to take out whatever came across the border.

But then again, that my personal, non P.C. opinion... :D

I agree... besides, what better training could you give the sniper crews than to have them all put in a year at the border trying to find prey then "discourage" them from crossing the border illegally!

At least set up those riot control gizmos that make people sick & disoriented and videotape it. That's almost like watching DUI videos!

We need the fire power, man power, and authority to smoke those a-holes anytime something like this happens. They have shot at LE from across the border before and it has always gone unanswered. We need to leave the border littered with the bodies of anyone who challenges us with deadly force.

Ok, if the sheriff or the border patrol returned fire from the Mexican military, how quickly could we get military forces to that location to support and allow the LE forces to pull out?

How quickly could the Mexicans get reenforcements to that position, and would the field commander on their side order an advance?

Returning fire is good, but I'd just be afraid that the local police and ICE would be overwhemled by mexican reenforcements. Do they have armor? Do they keep armor near the border? Does ICE carry AT-4s?

Okay... so not doing anything at that time... and NOW... what's that do?

Its obvious that a large amount of the Gov't is corrupt and support the illegal immigrants and narcotics movement.

I do not think anyone supported a fight right then and there. The bitching is about the fact that the US and its ***** policy allows NOTHING to be done.

Exactly! A couple cops with hand guns against a gang of guys with military rifles is suicide. We need the military down there with ROE to take no guff no how. :D
