    Number of immigrants

    After working for the immigration section here I am blown away by the amount of immigrants we (Canada) allow in. Seems like anyone who applies we let in and if they get rejected once and apply again their almost sure to get in the second time. Does anyone know how it works in the US. I am sure it is harder to immigrate to the USA but does anyone know for sure? Chewy and K-9Maly and thoughts?

    Not a lot better but a little. Canada seems the worst for letting everyone in. There was a study done by the various Intel agencies and they said that over 90% of the various terrorist organizations throughout the world had active cells in Canada...and that study was done before 2001! Thats what you get for being so "nice" Both our countries need to seriously stop immigration for a little while until we can get things under control. We jumped into this whole DHS thing and are still in the process of changing and updating our systems and such. They should have just stopped immigration into the country and fixed everything at once rather than doing it a little at a time. What do I know though...

    Same thing is happening here with Immigration, Customs, and Agriculture all merging into the CBSA. It doesn't surprise me that we have active cells working here, I cringe when I see some of these people let in. The problem with having a counrty with due process is you can't just deport or send people back because you want to. All the proper regulations and procedures have to be followed that relate to the statute. Most of the people that say the magic "R" word end up getting in whether they have a legitimate fear of presecution or not. I think we need to beef up CSIS big time. After that we need the RCMP to focus more on count-terrorism. Thirdly, stop being so nice. Lastly, give more power to front line officers (firearms at the land borders, more material, more officers, etc.). Anyway thats my diatribe, but not a day goes by that I don't think about the terrorist attacks on the USA and England wonder when its our turn. Our troops are going into a hostile part of Afghanistan now to. Ok i'll stop now.

    Not really. They just cross the southern border. No muss, no fuss, no paperwork. And our Leaders pretend it's not a problem.

    Ya, This is just one more step to our joint North American Customs & Immigration agency. They keep talking about eventually having no northern border and just having joint US/Canadian agency to staff all ports and airports and focusing on the points of entry jointly and not worrying about the northern border. we will see but I don't really see it happening effectively.?

    You guys have troops?? :D J/K

    In 2001 Tennessee passed legislation that allowed undocumented persons the ability to obtain an unrestricted TN drivers license. With that and TennCare (the nearly free state health insurance to anyone breathing) there was a mass influx of illegal immigrants to the state. Not only did this passage pose a great risk to Homeland Security, place stress on local agencies and institutions, but it also devalued the license itself. Several surrounding states and businesses refused to accept a TN DL as a valid form of ID.

    Fortunately in 2004 our newly elect Governor and Legislators enacted new law to only issue "driving certificates" to all those undocumented. But I cannot help but feel that damage has already been done.

    Has anyone else here had to deal this type of legislation?

    Yep, I am German and work and live in North Carolina as a OfficerII. If you try to come legal to the states, you need money (a lot) luck, or conections, married
    Luck = greencard lotery
    conections = you know
    money = You can get a investment visa and have to bring $1mio up.
    marriage = thats me.

    my wife is a Army JAG, met her in Kosovo.

    I had to pay more as $2500 fee for all paperwork to become a legal resident.
    right now I am processing for the citicenship (costs again rd. $1500)

    Wow...someone really ripped you off. We only paid about $700-$800 for my wife to get her permanent residency.

    Complaining about the mass immigration in Canada is a very ignorant arguement to make...
    Do you know why it is so?
    a) Globally Canada is a soft power, and needs to project its image as such. If we're not considered a open, multicultural, peace loving, ect ect conutry, then what are we?
    b) Nationally, and more importantly, Canadians do not reproduce at a high enough rate to sustain themselves, and the economy.

    I forget the exact figure, but on average, it's something like Canadians are reproducing at a rate of 1.2 for every person. That alone is simply sustaining the population - you ought to reproduce at a rate of 2 for every person. Some provinces like Que don't even reproduce themselves... I believe they're going at a rate of 0.8!!

    So you see, Canada requires such people to sustain its position globally, and economically.
    Plus, it's not like we don't have the room :D

    I wasn't really complaining as much as I was stating my experiences and observtions working on the front line of the immigration process in this country.

    There is a difference between being open and letting everyone and their dog in. I have seen people let into the country with Criminal recrods in their countries and I have also seen people who after immigrating have committed some serious Criminal Code offences. Peace loving and openness is good but because someone applies and is rejected 5 times should we let them in on their sixth application?

    Ya you are right about that. We only produce 10.84 births per 1,000 which is barely enough to sustain the current population.

    I don’t see how immigration can possibly be worse than here in the States. At least if they are documented in Canada, they are paying taxes (pulling their weight). Here in the U.S. all you have to due is jump the fence and we’ll pull your weight for you. To me, documented immigration is not a problem. It’s the undocumented immigrants that drive me absolutely insane!!

    I always thought the USA border was well protected on the Mexico side. After looking at the minutemen project webiste I see it is not so secure. Some places there is nothing but a small barbed wire fence. What would have to be done to stop the problem of illegal immigration?
