Mexico furious at tough US law on migrants

By John Authers in Mexico City and Edward Alden in Washington
    Published: May 13 2005 19:27 | Last updated: May 13 2005 19:27

Mexico has reacted furiously to a bill signed into law by the US this week that would fund a border wall and prevent illegal Mexican migrants from obtaining US driving licences.

President Vicente Fox said he would lodge a diplomatic complaint, and was considering complaints to multilateral bodies if Mexico could not unable to resolve the problem bilaterally.

In the US, leaders of the Mexican community threatened to strike to send a message to US employers that they could not survive without cheap Mexican labour.

Santiago Creel, Mexico's interior secretary, said the “Real ID” law was “negative, inconvenient, and obstructionist”.

“Building walls doesn't help anyone build a good neighbourhood,” he said. “Taking away the possibility of obtaining driving licences for people who are working in legal jobs, who pay their taxes there, who send remittances home here, seems to us to be an extreme measure, particularly given the new understanding that we thought we had after the re-election of President Bush.”

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, mayor of Mexico City, supported Mr Fox's stance. He said the problem of growing immigration could be “resolved by encouraging development in Mexico and Central America, not by building walls and using the border control”.

Since 2002, Mexico has adopted a popular policy of issuing undocumented labourers with consular identity cards, which are accepted as proof of identity by many US states for issuing driving licences, and for opening bank accounts. Under the new law, this would no longer be possible. The immigration provisions approved by Congress were attached by House Republicans to a bill that will provide more than $80bn for the war in Iraq this year, giving lawmakers little choice but to support it.

The White House, which at first opposed the new restrictions, supported them when it became clear they would pass Congress in spite of administration opposition.

President George W. Bush has said he wants to deal with illegal immigration by creating a temporary guest worker programme. But many Republicans are using the anxiety about terrorism to push for a crackdown on illegal immigrants.

I can't speak for the States/Cities/Counties they cause trouble in because we rarely have a Mexican cause trouble here. All I've seen them do here is work their butts off, go home and start all over again in the morning. We have quite a few of them here now because of the hurricane devastation.

Like I said, I am not where they are causing trouble so I guess my say doesn't count.

Even in Oregon, it costs us a fortune in health care, etc for illegals. It's killing the border states like Arizona.

And they are responsible for a lot of our drug trafficking.

It's amazing. Planes are diverted when a single no-fly list passenger shows up on their manifests. White-haired grandmothers are wanded in their wheelchairs in airports, and the media excoriates the "neatness" of the capitol evacuation, yet a law that might actually prevents millions of illegals from streaming freely into the United States is thought incredulous?

I'm sick and tired of Fox in Mexico and politicans here in DC offering up superficial national security fixes while our real security hemorrhages along the Southern border.

I see Fox's lips moving but all I hear is this buzzing noise coming from south of the border.

If we will build it , they WON"T come ( over the wall) . Senor Fox is welcome to file all of the complaints he wants and while he is at it, he can charter a bunch of C5 Galaxy airplanes to be loaded with his fellow countrymen ( illegals of course) for a one way ride to their HOME.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, mayor of Mexico City, supported Mr Fox's stance. He said the problem of growing immigration could be “resolved by encouraging development in Mexico and Central America, not by building walls and using the border control”.
Since when in the HELL is it our problem to encourage growth in YOUR countries. Sounds like a DOMESTIC problem YOU should be dealing with, not the U.S..

Fox can shove his stance straight up his ass and go self pollenate. If he'd take the time to fix his country and keep it from sinking further into the shithole its in, he might be able to keep people in his country and not have to worry about us building walls. Fox can go pound sand.

Here is a new policy for ya, Fox. How about we send all mexicans who commit ANY criminal act, back to good ol' Mexico?

I have nothing against the Mexican people who want to come here to work, but if they come illegally they are breaking the law. Let them apply for a work permit, and have a sponsor/employer if they want to come in.

I don't really care what Fox thinks about the situation, we have to do what's best for us.

I have gone thru so many emotional roller coasters with illegal immigration and Mexicans in general. Having worked on the southern border in San Diego and El Paso, I got to see the massive problem at ground level. I have chased and caught lots of illegals jumping over fences on the Border HWY in EP.
The amount of illegals coming over far exceeds the capacity of the social structure that is in place to take care of them. Yeah they work hard, but their input into the economy is not a balancing act that left wing spinsters want you to believe. Their tax revenue is not on par for the amount of people currently here and working, nor do the majority find work which has medical benefits to cover service. Yet many Mexicans get free medical service all the same. You try that at your local hospitable, just tell them you are on the Vicente Fox Plan, and to put it on the American Citizens tab. Now California is lobbying to get its own version of the Border Police to keep out illegals. If none of you have ever been to Southern California, its a trip to see the yellow caution signs warning you to keep an eye out for illegal aliens crossing HWY 5. It depicts a figure of a man and woman running and clinging to a child who is airborne by the parents. I don't want to placate Mexico anymore, and Vicente Fox should send each one of us a huge Thank You Card every Christmas for keeping his people fed, clothed, and healthy.
