Background Question

I'm considering appying for my local county sheriff's department but have concerns about something in my past.

In October 2008 I was served with a restraining order from an ex girlfriend. This happened while I was in the Marine Corps, she had EAS and went home to Michigan. Needless to say I was heartbroken from the breakup and made the bad decision and contacted her when she had told me not to. So she filed for a restraining order, I also received a Page 11 entry in my SRB as a result. I did not violate the order however. Although that should not make a difference I think. I have recently EAS'd myself in August and received an Honorable discharge after 9 years of service.

My question is, obviously this will hurt me, I'm just wondering how long after should I wait until I apply? Also, since it reflects in my military records, would I need to provide a copy of the Page 11 entry I received, or will they have access to all my military records as well.....

Depends on what the restraining order says was the reason. In some states, you can get one pretty easily. In states like Oregon, there has to be violence or a reasonable threat of violence before one was issued. In those cases, I would say you would have a real problem.

+ 1 to what RDS said; I would add that everything you provide will take some legwork off the investigator, s/he will appreciate it. It will also get you a quicker response from the agency(s) you apply for.

Yeah I will for sure disclose it. Integrity is big for me. I made a mistake and there's no sense in hiding something they will find anyway. No, there was no violence or threat of violence, just to break contact. I was just wondering if I should have waited. Thanks for the help, its much appreciated.
