    Meeting with the Mayor

    State: NJ

I live in a small 9,000 resident community (1.3 sq miles).

I have made other threads about the subject of part-timing, but now I received a phone call from the mayor, and he seems interested in listening to me.

On Friday I am driving up from school to meet with him. I plan on wearing a full suit, with my resume, and recommendation letters from the PD I interned with.

My uncle (in the field) said for me not to bring my paperwork on numbers, or anything of that sort. He said just to explain myself with confidence and how I can divorce myself from relationships in the community to uphold the law.

He gave me some great advice, but do any of you have any other things I should say, ask, do to make myself as appealing as possible? The Chief is shooting for me, but as you all know it is the council who makes the decision.

    Thank you

Not really. He probably has an idea of what he's looking for and you are it or not. And there's no way to tell what it is he wants in a police officer. Every community and agency is a little different. Small towns are usually more picky than bigger ones. If you try to come across as one way and he's looking for someone with a different attitude, that'll be it. Just be honest and do your best.

Thank you, I just dont know how much I can run with to have a lasting meeting.

I can tell him I am from the town so i know the area
I am an Eagle Scout and Assistant Scout master here
    I have Chief's recommendation
I have hands on experience with my internship
    I study CJ
and then I could go on about how i feel about LE and the community

Should I just leave it at that? I really am passionate about the field, but I just do not want to come up lost in trying to find the right things to say or not say enough,

Bear in mind, you can oversell yourself too. Calm down and see what happens. He will probably ask you some specific questions and won't be terribly interested in listening to a long monologue about how cool you are. Just give him what you think are your qualifications and then shut up.

If there is any last minute advice it would appreciated. The meeting is in about 2 hours.
