Military service records--How much can they check?

This is just a curious question I'm debating with some of my coworkers ( I want to win the argument.........lol)

If an applicant is a currently serving or has been honorably discharged from the Armed Forces, how much of your service record can be looked at by a background investigator?

For example, are they allowed to search through a persons medical records? We were just sitting here debating on what could be legally looked at. It would seem to me things like medical records would be illegal due to privacy issues.

So in a nut shell, what are they allowed to view and not view?

    Thanks for your help.

they are not permitted to look at anything without that little consent form you sign. you dont have to permit them to look, but then they probably wont hire you. basically if you want employment, they look at every piece of paper

They either will be allowed ( by you) to look at ALL of your military records or none. If you refuse them to look, you will not be getting a job with that agency. Thye will of course believe that you have something to hide. BI's are professionals and don't go around blabbing to others about personnel records. They wouldn't have a job for very long and the lawsuits would hurt.

Thanks for the clarification gentleman. I figured everything was game but wasn't entirely sure on medical info. Makes sense though.

    Take Care
