    any thoughts on my background

    Hey all,

I have been reading up trying to gauge my situation but cant seem to find any close enough to mine so I will make it short. I just want to see how I stand when I begin to apply for Departments.

    Good-
BA in Criminal Justice, might get my Masters
Have worked for the Public Safety Department at a University for two years
Certified EMT with volunteer work at a local hospital
Great credit, employment history, references and never done drugs
Have done a few internships and trainings with different departments, pretty much anything LE related I try to get involved with.

    Now the bad-
In 2007 I got a DUI. Worst decision I have ever made but I learned a lot and have my eyes set on a career in LE. Where I live, the wait is 5-7 years before one can apply to most agencies. One more year then i will begin the process.

My question being, will I look like a decent candidate after the wait is over for my DUI? I am also wondering what other problems it will create for me when it comes to things like the poly, psych and BI.

Any advice and/or thoughts are much appreciated.

    First, welcome to RP.

The dui is not a deal breaker, but you will have to understand that there will be candidates with the same credentials w/o a dui.

I'm wondering why you're wondering about the poly, psych and bi.

Honesty during those phases is a must.

Good luck and keep us posted about your progress.

Our wait is 5 years for one DUI, more than one is good bye. But we don't take it into consideration in hiring after the time has passed, we hire strictly on test scores (written and oral). Everything else, including background is pass/no pass. Good luck.

That was the only DUI or the only DUI you were caught? The poly will be interesting if you have other undetected DUI's and that's what you think about when they ask about undetected crimes if you haven't disclosed the undetected crimes. Not a LEO though. (and I apologize if you didn't think about undetected DUI's as an undetected crime. Now you will and I can't unring the bell).

That's a little over the top.
