Hello! I've been looking into becoming a law enforcement officer for a couple years and I have some questions regarding the background check process. Ill be as detailed as possible and would appreciate responses on each item.
Additional information about me:
The good:
1. 29 years old, few months from 30.
2. I have 111 college credit hours (looking to finish school just can’t afford it atm)
3. Not a drug user, I tried marijuana a couple times in college and that was over 6 years ago.
The bad:
4. I was arrested for trespassing when I was 20 years old. The case was dismissed so I wasn’t convicted and I’ve had it expunged. A buddy of mine and I were looking for a place to drink a few beers, we sat down in a construction site and were arrested stupid teenager stuff.
5. My credit history isn’t amazing, it was at one point. My job at that time 3 years ago closed and I was unemployed because of that, which led to not being able to pay my credit card bills. I have settled all the debt, so they are all paid off and have been for almost two years.
6. Several years ago I cosigned on a mortgage (I am now aware how stupid this was). The house was foreclosed on a couple years later. Though it wasn’t my house, as a cosigner I’m just as responsible even though I never contributed a single cent towards the mortgage. I don’t have any judgments or what not against me other than the foreclosure on my credit history.
7. The big problem: A few months ago I mistakenly made a couple comments to the media at my job. I was fired for it. A reporter, plain clothed, was at work snooping and overheard another employee and I talking. The reporter spoke up and said “oh really? What happened?” I made a few comments, it got back to the bosses and I was fired. I should have said sorry I can’t talk about it, but like an idiot (I was an idiot for sure) commented without thinking in the moment. I was told that the discharge was confidential, but the information was revealed to the unemployment office I don’t want to side step it or be dishonest on an application. I would clearly say I was fired and would even say “hey I said something to the wrong person, it was an honest mistake” I feel so ****ty about it. I’m normally so good about stuff like that. I wrote a statement when fired saying what had happened, why etc.
Not the cleanest history, but I know it’s not the worst.
1. Is the arrest a huge deal? Even though it was 10 years ago?
2. Is the foreclosure a huge deal? Being that I was a cosigner and that so many people in the USA are having the same issues?
3. The firing… probably a big deal… sigh. Would the full details be disclosed in a background investigation? Like would the check obtain my statement even if it’s supposed to be confidential? Or just my employment dates? (I probably need to call and ask my former employer)
Thank you for your time and honest opinions
