    OCD and getting hired?

My name is Lauren and I'm currently a criminal justice college student. I've always wanted to be a police officer but the only thing I'm concerned about is when I was in my junior year of high school I was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. I've been to counseling and I've been on anti-depressants ever since. I don't even take that much anymore, only 5mg. I haven't had any problems with my ocd since I've been on the medication. I've tried going off the medication, but I got physically ill when I tried so I just continue to take it. Is this an automatic disqualification? Or should I still try to apply in about 3 years or so? If I talk to my doctor about it, would it look better if I go completely off the medication and I'm okay? Other than that I just need to work out more. I've never had any criminal problems, my credit is excellent, and I've never even touched drugs or alcohol. Any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would imagine a doctor would have to make the call as I'm sure there are many factors to consider with it...

Find the doctor that an agency uses for their physicals and make an appointment and ask. More than likely he will tell you if he thinks your OCD impairs your ability to function as a police officer and whether the medication is allowed. He would probably also tell you if he thinks you would be a better candidate as OCD being treated with medication or as history of OCD but currently off medication.

You will disclose this either way so it doesn't hurt to see the doctors the agencies use. The doctor that the agency uses will most likely be the final say on everything.

I took anti-depressants for a few years, but after I retired. You need to talk to your doctor as to why you get sick when you stop taking them. Various ones have different side effects for different people, but getting sick when not taking them sounds troubling.
