    Backround check

    Hi
I am interested in going into law enforcement but just worried a little about my backround. Its not horrible but I dont know how serious depts. take them...im going for NYPD and NY state police. Ok...when I was 16-17 I was caught shoplifting, nothing big just being the "watch-out_ for my friends at a sporting goods store ( they attempted to take a paintball gun)... ( I am 20 now ).. I know thats not too big a deal because I was young...but I also took like 40$ from my job like 2 years ago...I wasnt caught or anything but I guess they will get around to questioning about previous jobs and such.

The juvy shoplifting charge is not a big deal but of course mention it. They will find out.

The theft of $40 again you will be asked , probably under a polygraph. Why don't you write out a check for the amount and send it to them ? Anonymously or otherwise. That way you can truthfully say that you returned the money.

No matter what do NOT lie or try to cover anything up. BI investigators are good at digging. Admit to everything you did so nobody can come back later and prove you lied, which would DQ you in a heartbeat.

You should be fine, start applying.

There is no poligraph for the NYPD. Just an interview with a psych doc. Tell them all cause they will find out. I know a guy who got hired went through the academy and six months later was fired for not mentioning a juvi conviction. Thats not the way you want to go.

Are you taking the test in june or feb.?

You may not have a problem with NYPD, they will take almost anyone as long as there are no felony convictions. You may run into a problem with NYSP, they are a little more selective. They have a lot of people vying for a few spots and tend to scrutinize their candidates more.

The NYPD may not give a polygraph, but do take the entire BI seriously. I went in & applied in December. I felt so strange after leaving the academy. I did mention prior use of MJ, and they were not pleased. Otherwise, the other questions they asked I'm good on. They will look @ your entire background. Contact all previous employers since HS, and want to get a sense of the kind of person you are. I'm still waiting for the Medical in Queens. How long has anyone else had to wait for the medical date? It's been 1 1/2 months already.

That is an understatement. I swear, if you forget to wash your hands once after using the restroom, they'll find out, and it could affect your standing!
