    Lasd

Hey everyone. Anyone else here processing with the LASD? I know they're still in a freeze pending the ballot measures in March, but I'm curious if anyone else is still hanging their hats with them. I've processed as far as the polygraph and have been waiting for the medical and psych. I know they cancelled a January academy class and offered those candidates positions in a February Reserve academy. In the meantime, I've been volunteering at one of their stations and going through the community academy.

Hey, I'd also like to hear some good (and reliable) news as well for a change!

There is no such thing as accurate/reliable information without a budget to support a fulltime LASD academy. I'm currently in the reserve academy bushido71 referred to in his post. From the limited information that is even suspect, most of the reserve academy participants are/were the next LASD academy recruits. If thats the case, I hope you are 120% LASD material because my fellow reserve recruits are the prize roses in a blue ribbon contest (how I made the cut is beyond me). The average age is 27 and have degrees. LASD has such a tight budget right now that they have the luxury of picking from what I think is the top 5% of the total applicant pool. My understanding also is that we are still required to continuously update and process for the fulltime deputy positions until a final offer is made. Scary when you think of the possibilty of falling below par on any of the steps in becoming a fulltime LASD Deputy. We have also heard that the next academy may be offered sometime within the next 12 to 14 months. Good luck if you decide to stay LASD. However shotgun the market to include the federal sector and hookup with what makes you happiest.

I would imagine the competition is tight as with any agency. Long Beach, for example, processed over 2200 applicants for 60 slots in a June academy, meaning they'll only end up hiring the top 3%. My feeling is that because LASD morale is so low now with their perennial budgetary woes, many of their applicants will end up moving on to other agencies by the time they finally get around to putting a class together. Otherwise, all their peers will be getting hired elsewhere while they wait around for LASD. And as much as I would love to work for them, I don't want the weight of getting laid off hanging over my head year in and year out. At any rate, I would imagine their eligibility list will change throughout the year as they continue to process other applicants. I certainly like to think of myself as "120% LASD material" but it's all relative. I may make the cut until they process yet another batch of candidates.

Don't rule yourself out. The pool gets shallower and shallower every year. The LASD doesn't necessary hire the best candidates. Quite a few slip through the cracks. Definitely apply and process all over!

If not the LASD, try the LAPD, but I hear, they may be having problems too.
