    My background

Hello guys My name is Dennis Donaghue and just joined the site. I have a few questions. To start off I have NO CRIMINAL RECORD at all. Never did drugs and I don't drink. I am 21 without a college degree and will that hurt my chances of getting hired? I'm going down to Baltimore next month and applying with them. The following things are the good in my background... when I was in high school I became a member of the US Naval Sea Cadets Corps. When I was with them I did some police training but it was only 7 days. It was a Very short police academy. It was just to get familiar of the police world.I fired a few guns including a shot gun. In my senior year I took a police course. Right now I'm a unarmed security officer. I'm training to be a Boston Special Police Officer. Once I'm done I'll have police powers and I can make a police arrest. The only things I cant do are vehicle stops and apply for or execute search warrants. I'm also a bodybuilder but I dont compete. My driving record is clean. I did have 1 speeding ticket but it was tossed out and I did get into a accident and it was also tossed out. I was not at fault. I got my driving record from the DMV and it doesn't show accident or the speeding ticket. I will tell Baltimore about the incidents though. Thanks for the replies and God Bless.

This means so little it is not even worth mentioning.

In my senior year I took a police course. Right now I'm a unarmed security officer. I'm training to be a Boston Special Police Officer.I don't reall y know anything about this position but there is always a reason that a " police officer " is called special meaning they have limited powers. Once I'm done I'll have police powers and I can make a police arrest. The only things I cant do are vehicle stops and apply for or execute search warrants. I'm also a bodybuilder but I dont compete. We had " Mr. America" show up for one of our physical agility tests and he couldn't do the situps and FAILED.

You are on the right track. Be aware though that places like Balt City have a high turnover rate.

Thanks for the reply. I'm guessing your response would be that I shouldn't have a problem getting hired?

Sorry about not being detailed about the special police. Basically they are private police. They dont get paid by the city meaning they dont work for the city. And the spos have police powers only on the site they are assigned to. Do you know any guys who work for Baltimore PD?

That isn't what he is saying. You have no significant hurdles, but police hiring is a competition against others for sometimes very few positions. Often it's how you stack up against your fellow applicant that counts.

Also to add to this conversation...I had two(2) welding jobs. My first one was when I was in high school.I got fired from that job because I didn't meet their standards. The second one was after high school. I was about to get fired from the welding position and the company was going to switch me to another department which was going to be the grinding department. This company was a sheet metal company. I ended up quitting and getting a job at a security company and have been doing security ever since(2.5yrs).

Also I'm CPR certified and I'm a certifed first responder. Not a civilan first responder but I took the training to be a first responder just like the police here in ma did. Those are the other good things that I have for my background. Sorry to keep posting. Thanks again for the help.

Again, Dennis, at the end of the day it will be how well you do on the testing.

The most important thing about your background is to not have anything negative. Getting fired from your welding job is no big deal as long as the people there say you were honest, worked hard, showed up on time, etc. CPR certification will give you a head nod and that's about it.

As was said, meeting the minimums will allow you to compete. How well you do in that competition (written and oral exams) will determine whether or not you are hired Everything else after that is pretty much pass/fail (physical agility, psych., medical, background, etc).

No one can say what your chances are, it depends on how well you do on the written and oral board compared to how others applying do. Unfortunately, few departments look at someone and say, "You look like you'd make a hell of a cop" and hire you.

You seem to be fishing for someone to say you'll probably get hired and we can't do that.

Thanks for the reply. Just to let you know Baltimore PD has no oral board. They do everything but that. They only do the preliminary interview but from what I heard its only to talk about the applicants background. But yes I understand about the written and oral. have to get a good score on those two.

During the interview, do not pull your shirt sleeve back and ask if they want to see some real guns!

    Good luck in your endeavors.

Dammit is that why I didn't get that one job? Maybe it was because I didn't have any guns??
