    Will this stuff disqualify me?

I have been expressing interest in the law enforcement field for some time now, and I was wondering if recent things will disqualify me from becoming a police officer in the state of connecticut?

First off, I do not do drugs, I dont smoke, and my consumption of alcohol is minimal at best. however, I have had problems with my soon to be ex-wife.

She had left a household that was in my name with animals inside, and the animal control officer came and took the animals out of the place. The conditions were deplorable, and she pushed the whole thing on me saying i was the last resident in the household to be there. As such I was charged with 3 initial counts of animal cruelty, and since one of the cats had kitten at the time I was not there, it was bumped up to 8 counts. I was put into an ar program and had to do 150 hours of service at an animal shelter, and pay restitution to the shelter which took the animals. the case was dismissed at the end of the ar program.

The second issue was a domestic involving me bringing my ex home, she and i were arguing and she called 911 and told them i would not bring her home, even though i was seconds away from dropping her off. As such, the police arrived to her home and she stated that her (fake) hair had been pulled out by me. As such the cop charged me with 3rd degree assault and unlawful restraint. I was told to attend 9 counseling sessions and the case was dismissed.

However, these two things worry me because it harms my character and were caused by a mentally unstable woman. I dont want these things to ruin my chances at ever making it in law enforcement. Can someone let me know if these things would cause me to be DQ'd? Thank you.

Remember when you thought she was just the sweetest, cutest thing in the world???

Yep, both are going to hurt you, I'm afraid. You should have pleaded not guilty and tried to be acquitted.

You'll have to try and see. If the DV was dismissed, perhaps.

On the animal charge, why didn't you just bring in proof to the court that you didn't live there? That shouldn't have been hard to do.

On the DV, she called the police because you wouldn't take her home? And they came on that basis???? How did you have a legal obligation to take her anywhere?

I was the lease holder of the apartment, so i was charged on the grounds that i was the last legally known resident of that apartment. Plus, the states attorney stated that if it were brought to trial I would most likely lose because of my inability to find any witnesses to the events that had happened.

The restraint charge was based off of her telling the police officer that I would not drop her off, when in fact while she was on the phone with 911 I offered to let her out of the vehicle several times. In light of that, the family relations aspect in the state of connecticut picked up the case and deferred it to counseling sessions.

Apparently I have to take responsibility for putting myself in those situations either directly or indirectly, but I would think that the fact that they even granted the programs proved to the courts that I am not a criminal, nor have a desire to continue on such a path.

Both situations are noticeable bruises on your background , the DV case especially. Even if the cases were ultimately dismissed , they were only dismissed becsause you completed " probation " , NOT because of lack of evidence.

Obviously I had to ask because I did not have enough support to take the cases to trial to get them acquitted. It was either take what was there at the time, or risk jail time. Given the advisement of the state attorney, I am not sure I made exactly the right choice. Either way, i am sure I can pursue a career as an armed guard once again. Thanks very much for the information

Next time, get a lawyer. I think if you'd had your own legal representation both would have come out differently. In the long run, they're worth the money.

As far as the concealed carry permit. I have had two domestic battery arrests(No convictions) on my record and I was able to get my permit without problem. This was in Florida where it is very difficult to obtain a CC permit in the first place. Not to mention I was in the middle of a court case for Improper exhibition of a firearm. They tend to look more at convictions. Your state could however be different in these regards. Best of luck and never give up on anything.

Because no one has posted inside of this thread in 8 months. That's what makes it an old thread. Read the forum rules, before you become self righteous about what makes something what it is in forum.

I'm sorry if I sounded self-righteous with my post.. I was merely asking so as to not repeat "digging up old threads"
