Should I take the job or wait?

I live in IL and have been starting my look for employment around the central area. I've come to find that there's not a lot here, and the ones that hire usually prefer guys who are certified. I don't want to go up to Chicago, which is probably my best chance, so thats out of the question. My plan is to just try to outshine all the others when the tests come up.

Well I've recently gotten an offer to go over to IN to have a job there. I have family in the area, but my immediate family is here, along with my fiancée and her family. I'm not sure if I should move or not. My fiance would not come with me and thats a 3.5 hour drive one way. We are in the process of planning out wedding for 2012 which the pay would help save for that, but im thinking it would add stress to the situation.

Have you guys ever encountered a situation like this? I realize it all comes down to my individual situation, but would it be a good idea to just go ahead and take the job while I can, then try to transfer back later? Or just wait it out here?

    Thanks for the advice.

Same as mine, very mixed. Doesn't want me to miss the opportunity, but also doesn't want me to leave.

Do jobs like this come around often? Is it easy to transfer vs new hire?

I'm not a LEO but I have been in the opposite position ( not the marriage part) but the job part, you have to outweight the pros and cons...how will you continue to have a relationship with this person if you move and they choose to stay behind?
which is more of a priority? A wife or a job... you have to find a common ground
in my situation it was the best thing I could have done for him , he is now very succesful with his job. he is actually a Border Patrol officer.... talk it over with your fiance, I might be in the minority but if she really loves you and this is something you truly want to do she will sacrifice.... just my 2 cents...

She'd move out there after a year. I'm not sure if this was misunderstood. We don't live together, and refuse to before we are married. So its not like once we're married shes still going to stay in IL, she will move over once we get married in about a year.

OK , now the plan changes.

So , you can still get married and get the job you want. It's just that you will have to move 3.5 hrs away and won't be able to see her every day.

If you and her can AGREE on this and feel it won't ruin the relationship.....GO FOR IT.

And kudos for not living together fiirst, principles are principles. Don't let ANYONE talk down to you about personal standards and principles.

that's not bad at all then you can definately accomplish BOTH military spouses do it all the time... * I * misunderstood I read it like she would NEVER move... and I think other's read it that way too but I could be wrong..3.5 hours is nothing for just a year...you can do it.

Of every one hundred men, ten should not even be here. Eighty are nothing but targets. Nine are real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the One... One of them is a Warrior... He will bring the others back.

    "Wrong door, buddy!"

In this economy and with the knowledge that she will move out in about a year, I'd be all over that job. Yes it will suck living 3.5 hours away for a year, but one or both of you could take vacations during that year and spend some quality time together, as well as weekends, both long and regular. Technology is not the same as it was 10-20 years ago. There's Skype (I know it isn't the same as being there but at least you get to see each other), free long distance on various phone services, and driving 3.5 hours is not a bad drive. It's not like you are going half way around the world.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

Translation for the intellectually challenged: If the government screws the people too much, it is the right and duty of the people to revolt and form a new government.
