Possible Issue for Background Check

I have a clean record. Never been commited of a crime, and have had only 1 speeding ticket in my life. However, I have about 5 cousins who are felons. They have some serious charges on their record. Would the fact I'm associated with them prevent me from joining LE?

Not to my knowledge. Now if you assisted them in commiting said felonies, or conspired with them, that maybe detramental to your career goals.

Are you close with them now? Do you hang out with them on a regular basis? Are they still involved in illegal activity? Bi's know that you can't choose who you are related to - EVERYONE has a black sheep (or five!), but it's your specific circumstances that are what's going to come down to.

I dont speak with them too often. I sometimes see them on holidays (when they are not locked up). Pretty sure a few of them are still involved with some stuff. I'm just afraid that if I do become LE they will start asking me for "favors". I dont know if the possibility of that would look bad on my part.

Sounds to me like they are distant cousins, is that correct? As for if you become a LEO, chances are high that they will do their best to steer clear of you since they are quite upset with those in this career field already. If they should ask for favors, just tell them that any admission of illegal activity to you will result in the same as if they confessed to any other officer. That would most likely keep them from talking to you.

Thanks. You're probably right. If I'm luckily enough to become LE I'd assume they would steer away from me (which is probably a good thing). They are first cousins, but I'm not really down with what they do. Guess I dont know your definition of "distant cousins". They are first cousins who live in the same area as me, but we are not close like we were as kids haha if that makes sense. I'd rather bust them then hang out with them to be honest.

I have several cousins who are/were ex cons. I saw them infrequently and didn't hang out with them socially though.

If you end up working where they live, you will want to make sure other officers take any calls involving them.

We dont do everything " normally " , thats how we catch people doing bad stuff.
