    applying for the NJSP

    Hello everyone!!

I'm 21, I'll be 22 on the 20th. I plan on mailing my application in on Monday. Now on the second page it says "Application package must be postmarked no later than May 1, 2004 to be considered for classes scheduled in July of 2005. Does that mean the next academy class is July 2005? Why so far off? Guess it will give me a chance to get into great shape for the academy. I've been doing push-ups everyday and just started a gym routine. Does anyone know if handwriting "experts" examine your application, my handwriting is legible but its not going to win any awards for neatness.

why is it 'so far off'? because I've never seen an application go in and come out with everything needed being done in less than 1 month for a new hire; even for a rinky dink place. Takes time to interview you, etc, etc.

Would be better for you to have always done something physical but yeah starting now is better than not at all.

If you are looking at going through the NJSP academy you better start working out now. I visited the academy in '97 and have NEVER seen a tougher physical program in law enforcement.

I think the police academy you're referring to is in Sea girt. My fiancee went through that academy for DOC. It's rough. You have to live there for 3 months and only come home on weekends. It's hardcore millitary style. Run, Run, Run!

some numbers for those intrested. last hiring cycle NJSP had 6,000 applicants. 4,000 were invited to the test. 2600 were invited to the PT test. 1800 went through psych/background/ and medical. they hired 300 troopers

Odds are the date will change a few times. I'm in the current process and the academy was supposed to start in Jan. Now it's the end of March. I don't think handwriting experts are used, but this could be the most important application you ever fill out. Make a copy, get everything down, then write your good copy in your best handwriting. It is very important I believe. Try to avoid using white out and crossouts, too.

At the physical test last year, people were dropping like flies. Your best bet is to get in shape now as was stated. People struggled to do push-ups and ended up short and were DQ'd. Start running as well. I hear the acdemy is the toughest around. Hopefully I will receive the honor to attend, and you can try to prepare yourself properly, but do not get discouraged. It is a long, difficult process, and I'm honrored to have made it this far, and will hopefully have the opportunity to go to Sea Girt next month (fingers-crossed).

Overall, be patient. I applied 3 years ago and did not get in. I applied to the current process exactly 1 year ago, and it is just finishing up now, and I have yet to get official word. Still have medical and psych to go.

If you have any questions let me know and good luck.
