    Alternatives to Travel

I am currently going through the application process with an academy in Denver, and am living in Florida. I have already made numerous costly flights out there and have exhausted financial resources for now. I have to schedule an interview with them on or between February 18th and March 24th. I'm moving back to Colorado and will be arriving by car on approximately the 28th of March. The chances of pushing the closing interview date back is very slim as they will be making the final choices on or near my arrival date in Colorado.

Most can probably understand why I don't want to buy a $300 plane ticket for a 2-day trip, then return by car 2 weeks later, plus financial reasons are also against getting a flight. The instructors are reviewing my situation, but they said that pushing the date back probably would not happen.

My question to you guys is this: Have you ever heard of or participated in any other interview (such as on the phone) juxtaposed to an in person meeting? Do you think that attempting to do a phone interview would be a bad idea?

Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    -Gabe

I would think most law enforcement interviews would be done face-to-face...at least the initial interview.

I'm a cop in CO and don't know of any dept or academy which will hold a phone interview in place of a face to face meeting. If you have sacrificed this much to get here, sell something and keep going. Denver is a good place to be a cop, but you better get used to cold weather! Why are you leaving FL? If you want more info PM me about depts which are hiring. Good luck!

Phone interview ? No way. They want to SEE and talk to you.

Next time try applying to Georgia or someplace closer.

Thanks guys, I kinda figured there would be no other alternatives. 911; I used to live in CO and about 5 people I know bought places on the water out here, and all needed help with renovation so I came out, but it looks like it isn't the place I want to start my career.

It's a nice place but my all my family and most of my friends are back in Colorado. I put in 3 applications down here to departments I would like to work for but none were hiring at the time.

You have to a have a face to face interview, I seriously doubt any department (or company) would make those kind of accomodations for entry level jobs. Besides, why should a dept go out of its way for that? I'm sure they have thousands of applicants behind you that would be more than willing to fly out there.

Have you looked at departments that offer out of town testing? Usually out of town applicants can come in and do most of the steps, if not all, in the same weekend. I know big departments like LAPD, Dallas PD, and many others do this. Perhaps Denver or Colorado Springs does as well.

Maybe you might just have to move and then begin applying??

Well, I just got an e-mail from the academy director and they said that they will hold the interview for me until I am in town. They said it wouldn't be a problem at all to interview when I move back!! It's now scheduled for the 29th of March. With any luck, I'll make the May academy. Thanks for the advice

    4. Motels/hotels for up to 30 days while house hunting.
    5. Mileage for personal vehicle(s) based on current IRS mileage rate.
    6. Non-refundable residential rental fees and deposits on new residence.
    7. Lost residential fees and deposits.
    8. Disconnecting and re-connecting utilities.

I have looked into Portland's lateral program and to say that I am impressed is an understatement.

If you apply in Portland be prepared to wait. I took the lateral exam in Nov. of 2002. I heard from my BI two weeks ago. He said I'm still in the running, but they don't have the resources to hire as many as they used to.
