    Debt and my chances

First of all I would like to thank all of the officers here that take time from their days to answer our questions.

My question is primarily about my debt. I graduated from college in 2007 and had a hard time finding a job, so i decided to try our my own business. Anyways the business failed and a accumulated 11,800 dollars of credit card debt (stupid I know ). This is on top of the 60,000 of student loans I also owe.

My issue is not so much my credit ( my fico score is 730) as it is the totality of my debt. I have been late on a 3 payments in the last year but everything is current and have never had anything in collections.

As far as my complete profile I am a 26 year old Mexican male. I have a degree. Nothing too crazy in my background.

I have a ticket for running a stop sign on campus (2003).

Fix it ticket for a tail light in 2004.

    No arrests.

Experimented with Marijuana in college (5 times), the last time being 6 years ago.

The marijuana usage worries me, but I know that with time I would be considered. My worry is my debt. I have a job now but its on the non=profit sector so i can only afford to pay the minimum.

How do I look as a candidate all things being considered?

With that said, thank you for your service and sacrifice keeping my family and my self safe.

I doubt the debt will be a problem as long as you haven't been in collection and have been making payments reasonably on time.

I don't see the other as eliminating you.

    Good luck!
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

RDS answered your question, but your post raised a different one for me. You state you are a Mexican male. Are you a US citizen? If not, is the police job you are considering in the US or Mexico?

I am an American citizen. I was born in california. I apologize for my typos 6AM here and I cant sleep. Stress I suppose.

Under a lot of pressure lately. My dream has been to be a police officer for a long long time. I got lost when i was 4 years old and a very kind officer found me wondering the streets and took care of me untill they could track my parents down. Ever since then I knew what I wanted to be.

It has not been an easy jouney but I have tried very hard to be the best man I could be.

But in the end I know that if something happens to my job my credit and dream will be killed... Keeps me up at night. Hence why im responding now instead of sleeping lol.

I am going to have a talk with my mom and see if I can move in with her rent free. I made a budget and IF i stick to it assuming I can live next to rent free for the next 4 years I can pay off t credit cards in full as well take a chunk out of my private student loans. It will be hard but I can do it with sacrifice.

I have been saving as much s I can because my job outlook is pretty bleak here in Sacramento and my Job has had an end date. I work for a program that is in it's last year of it's Grant. Luckily I just found out that there is a very very good chance our grant will be extended indefinitely.

I would prefer not to expend all my available cash untiil I know my job will not be ending. It's really tough here in Sacramento, It took me 9 Months to find my job. I was unemployed for 6 untilll I found a job unloading shipping containers.

Right now I've been looking at some part time warehouse work or some work ni the Fast Food industry but no one is hiring for a part-time night schedule as of yet. I work from 8 to 6:30 Monday-Thurs.

Hopefully I can find something soon. The extra income would really help. I was considering donating plasma but I calculated I would have to spend more on food to replenish it then what I would get out lol.

Have you considered the military- active, reserve or guard? You could get experience as well as funds to alleviate some of your debt burden. I know times are tough and I don't mean this rude but being unemployed, having no productive work history, in alot of debt and living with mom probably won't make a favorable impression upon a hiring board.

Your debt shouldn't be an obstacle to getting hired. Due to my law degree, I wound up with $148,000 of student loan debt. As long as you are meeting your payments, you will be fine.
