Hello everyone. I’ve been searching and reading many threads in this forum hoping to find a situation similar to what I’m in but I have not had any luck. I’m a 34 year old asian male, hoping to start a second career as a LEO so I would love to hear your opinions on my background.
Positives
-Excellent credit (750). I am a homeowner and have never had a late payment for any credit cards or loans.
-Stable employment history. I’ve been at my current company for nearly 9 years and have never been fired from any job.
-No illegal drug use, ever.
-In good physical shape. I’m 5’ 8”, 180 with a muscular build.
-I’ve gone on 2 ride-alongs with 2 separate departments.
-Bilingual, English and Vietnamese.
-2-year A.A.
-4-year B.S. in Information Technology – Network Security/Computer Forensics specialization.
Negatives
-No military experience. I know cops tend to look favorably on this but I sadly, I have none. :(
-Two speeding tickets, 12 and 14 years ago respectively. I had them both dismissed after passing defensive driving classes.
-Shoddy academic history:
I graduated high school in the top 10% of my class and went to college on a full scholarship. Three years and many failed classes later my scholarship gets dropped due to poor academic performance. I left that university to get a 2 year degree from a local community college instead. I completed my associate’s degree and got a blue-collar job working for an electronics company where I have been working ever since. I’ve been working full time and taking online classes for the past 4 years because I’ve always wanted to finish my Bachelor’s degree. I’m doing great so far (3.6 – 3.7 GPA) and will graduate next year.
I talked to some local beat cops about my history and they told me that I should be fine. In fact, I was told that I would be a very desirable applicant thanks to my choice of 4-year degree and second language. They also mentioned the fact that minorities tend to get a leg up when it comes to hiring… I hate bringing up the race card but I figured with a job as competitive as this that anything would help.
Now I’d like to hear your thoughts. Did I do enough to straighten myself out after struggling badly during my early college years?
