Does past marijuana usage disqualify you?

I'm 25 years old, I got my Bachelor's Degree in Business last year from Cal State Fullerton, and I'm ready to start applying for PD's. This is something I've been wanting to do since I was 19. I did smoke for about a year when I was 17-18, but when I found out this was what I wanted to do, I quit. I never tried anything else(no coke, lsd, ecstacy, etc.), never sold either. I have been looking at a lot of other posts on this site, but the other posts are people who only experimented, and other posts were people who tried hard drugs on top of smoking. I have been 6 years clean. I know different departments have different standards, but I want to see what cop's on here have to say.

The portion in bold was you answering your own question.

I just want to see, for the cops that answer this, if I'd be applicable for their department or know the standards of other departments.

I've worked for 3 LE agencies, with two of them you'd be deemed ineligible due to the amount of usage (approximately a year's worth). With the third, you'd be eligible because their policy didn't have a maximum usage requirement, just a minimum number of years of non-use (5), which you have.

I don't see how that changes my original post, though, that each agency has their own standards, so the impetus is on you to inquire with department recruiters to see if you can apply.

Q: Does past marijuana usage disqualify you?

A: Being that marijuana is illegal to possess, let alone use, what do you think?

As an aside, I do not understand how potential applicants can label some usage "experimentation". What are you.. a freaking chemist?

To Kimble: I just wanted to see what kind of shot I still had, I still see I have a pretty decent shot because over these years I have involved myself with Law Enforcement sponsored groups. May I ask which state(s) you were an LEO?

To Curt: In California it's different, if Prop215 for marijuana passes this November, that could change a lot of standards for departments.

P.S. That brings up another question, if anyone here knows? If Prop215 does pass, will that make it legal for cops to smoke? Because I looked up the laws for it, if it does pass, and it's pretty much treated like alcohol.

It may, it may not. Prop 215 isn't going to change the fact that possession is still a violation of federal law.

Your stock just dropped about 20 points.

It sounds as though the only reason you quit smoking is to pursue a LE career, not because doing so is wrong. It also sounds as if you'd resume smoking if you thought you could do so legally.

To answer your question... No, cops are not going to be able to smoke weed. It's still against federal law. In any case, few cops would want to and those that would are considered idiots and won't last long as cops.

It was just a question...and no even if it did become legal, I would not go back to smoking. I haven't thought about going to back to it for 6 years and I didn't plan on it.

    It was simply a question

And you got simple, straight-forward answers. Is that not what you asked for?

Ask the agencies you apply to. Then watch your paperwork get round filed.

OP, this is not a situation where you can have your cake and eat it too. In your heart, you are going to have to choose which is more important to you: smoking pot, or being a cop.

Only you can make that choice.
