44 Yr Old Patrol Officer...would you hire me?

When I come out of the Academy I will be 44. In great physical shape. B.A. and Master's degree. No disqualifiers.

I'm inclined to go into investigations (DMV, etc...) because that's what I do now, but I am also interested in patrol.

What's the likelihood that your department would put a 44 yr old on the street with no prior L.E. experience?

I'm no police officer, but my 2 cents would be that there younger people out there. You have to look at it from the departments point of view. Would they want an older guy in great physical shape in the streets, or a younger guy in great physical shape in the streets.

On my job most guys and gals are a year or two away from retirement at your age. That said, they also have guys well past your age still working. Based on your post, I'd hire you.

As I said in your other post, we hire people in their 40's all the time. People with real life experience take to the job much better than kids straight out of college.

You stand a good chance of being hired with a good education and having life experience. You stand a much better chance of being on patrol for 5-10 years before you would be considered for an investigative position. Although your background is great , you don't have a degree in " the college of the street" under your belt.

Before anyone does K9, Detective, SWAT etc, they need to have a WELL ROUNDED knowledge of the street as a patrol officer. You can't get it any other way then by spending time on the street.

I agree, you've got a ton of experience in the job force. I would hire you before a youngster all things being equal...

There's a lot to be said about an experienced worker who is stable, less likely to job-hop, and has a punctual reporting record.
