A background investigation can take a long time. The investigator may also be waiting on info from your references, they send them a packet of information to fill out on you. I honestly can't remember how long my background investigation took, but it is different for everyone. How long has it been so far?
Actual conversation with suspect
Suspect: Why am I under arrest?
Me: For posession of CDS.
Suspect: Man, it wasn't CDS! It was E pills!

My new hero!
Atlanta Police Department had a recruitment event here in MI 3 weeks ago and I was told that I should hear from an investigator within a week. I have called 3 times and sent and email over the past few weeks but no response.
If you've made that many contacts that have gone unanswered, it's probably best to take a step back at this point and let them contact you next. I realize they said they'd call you in a week and it's been 3, but no police agency in the world puts processing applications as a top priority (investigating crimes and handling calls for service tend to be given more priority). For the agency I work with now, from the time I sent in my application to the time my background investigation began was approx. 6 months (and then the BI lasted about 6 months).
Don't let your enthusiasm rub a department the wrong way by being seen as an annoyance. After 4 separate contact attempts by both phone and email, let them make the next move, and consider applying with other agencies as well to better your chances.
