    Decipher this e-mail

So, I did all my testing for my local police department last week, and about an hour ago I received this e-mail from them.

"Thank you for your time and interest in interviewing for the position of Police Officer with the City of St. George. We had a large number of qualified applicants and choosing candidates to fill the current openings was difficult.

Your name has been added to a hiring roster that will be used to fill any Police Officer vacancies occurring in the next year. Please contact me if, or when, you are no longer interested in being on this hiring roster.

Please feel free to apply for other positions within the City. We wish you the best of success in achieving your career goals."

It's hard to tell from that e-mail on whether or not I will be hearing from them anytime soon. I guess if I made it onto the hiring roster then that means I at least passed the oral interview? What are your thoughts on this?

You should call to make sure, but it appears to me that you were not selected for any of the current open positions, but will be placed on a reserve hiring list in the event of any future openings within the next year.

I do not think you will be hearing from them soon, but you need to check to make sure.

You should be proud that you made it to a hiring list, few make that far.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I figured. I guess I should call the Human Resources department to find out how far down on the list I am. I guess it's time to start putting in some applications to other departments. It's a pity though because I really wanted this one.

They aren't. I've already applied at a couple other departments. However, St. George has been the first to contact me and seeing as how it's my home town I really wanted it.

    Just a little update:
I contacted the HR department by e-mail to see if there was any way to find out where at on the list I was placed, this was her response.

"I don’t have the spreadsheet yet but we usually don’t tell people their exact rank. I can tell you that you are in the top 10."

That last line is making me feel a lot more hopeful!

That's strange. Here, they publish the list and post it with your rank on the list. Congrats on being in the top ten. Sounds like you may have an excellent chance.
Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

Yeah, I'm not sure why they don't post the list either, it would be nice to know exactly where I stand. However, I've been talking to my friend who is one of the U.S. marshalls in town, and he said that I'm not a backup for people who have already been hired, they choose people to hire from that list. He also said that they will be choosing 2-3 people a month from that list to fill the slots, so hopefully I'm near the top. I'm not going to lie though, it feels pretty good to know that out of the 200+ applicants, I've been put in the top 10!
