Chance of AZ academy with suicide attempt in past?

I have a family member who is planning to apply to train as a LEO in AZ. About 1 year ago he attempted suicide. No EMS was called and he was not admitted to the hospital but he briefly had counseling after the attempt. I think the counseling lasted 3-4 months and he was on meds. I do not know if he is still on meds.

He is in his late 20's.

Does he stand a snowball's chance in Arizona of getting in?

    Thanks.

    Almost certainly not.

One year ago, this person was unstable enough to attempt to take their own life. It is unlikely that they will be judged psychologically sound enough by a police department to be given a gun and subjected to the stresses and pressures of Law Enforcement.

They will have to disclose this information as part of the background and application process, and it will probably keep this person out of Law Enforcement.

I'm sure that (s)he will find another way to contribute to society, though...

I was discharged from the Army with an ELS (entry-level separation) and I have the same dilemma... I think my stomach just dropped when I read your response.

Was your ELS an attempted suicide? The circumstances there will make all the difference. There are plenty of ELS circumstances that will have no negative effect on your application at all.

Start a new thread with your circumstances and we'll take a look if you want an honest opinion...
